Speaker's Briefing: Supporting Investment in Start-Ups for Job Growth

State Representative Robin Vos talks about a $25 million "investment capital" proposal that will help bolster private industry growth in Wisconsin.

I'm State Representative Robin Vos and this is the Speaker's Briefing.

I've been saying for years that Wisconsin is open for business, and we need to do more to help startup companies. Between 1980 and 2005 all net job growth in America was due to startups. In order to grow our economy and create jobs, Wisconsin needs to attract investors who will help expand business opportunities in this state. That's why I support a $25 million bipartisan plan to develop five fast-growing, stable industries like Agriculture and I-T.

Investment capital works by investing in companies to help them hire talented individuals or purchase new equipment to make their dream a reality. This is not merely a handout to businesses: we will require a 2-to-1 match, ensuring there is a solid commitment before any investment is made.

Eight years ago we created the Wisconsin investors' tax credit, which became a national model for public/private cooperation. Investment capital is a natural progression that will help us to keep pace with states that have created similar programs.Β

Our investment capital proposal will mean more jobs and money flowing into the state, and is a win for both Wisconsin taxpayers and industry.Β
