RSO Pops 'American Originals' in the Weekend Spotlight

The Racine Symphony Orchestra takes center stage this summer weekend. Your Racine County activities list runs the gamut from chess to an all-day music jam. Come along with Real Racine for another action-packed weekend.

 

            RSO kicks it off. The Racine Symphony Orchestra Summer Pops Concert launches the organization's 2013-14 season on Friday, June 28 at Festival Hall, 5 Fifth St.. The theme "American Originals" means an evening of memorable music from composers George Gershwin and Leroy Anderson. You'll hear classics like "An American in Paris" and "Blue Tango."  Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets always go fast, so act right away.             Rockin' out on Saturday.  Are you up for 8 hours of live music from a variety of genres? Then, the Fifth Annual Dan Jam is for you.!  Dan Jam, celebrating the life of the late Daniel Robert Conner, benefits the Racine County Food Bank. This year's Jam is 2-10 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson Park Pavilion, 6200 Northwestern Ave.  You'll hear 11 different groups and have a pig and corn roast, raffle, games and kids activities. Admission is $8 (with two nonperishable food items.) Kids under age 6 get in free.

            Anyone for chess?  It's time again for the Mayor's Chess Challenge. Everyone, from beginners to experts, are invited to stop by Monument Square in Downtown Racine from 12-3 p.m. Saturday. Chess boards will be set up. If you don't know how to play, volunteers from EL Chess Academics will teach you. Kids who participate will receive trophies and ribbons. It's sponsored by GE Volunteers, Downtown Racine Corp., the Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and the Mayor's office with support from Educators Credit Union.

 

            It's football time. Racine Raiders football is back!  The 2012 Semi-Pro BCS champions, open the season against the Sioux Falls Stallions at 7 p.m. Saturday at Horlick Field, 1648 N. Memorial Drive. Tickets are available at several area businesses and at the gate. Prices are $8 for adults; $6 for seniors and $4 for students. Military veterans with ID are admitted free.             The real deal. Authentic cuisine (we're talkin' shish kebob, sarma and penelee) is among the highlights of the St. Hagop Church annual Armenian Picnic on Sunday at Johnson Park, 6200 Northwestern Ave. The picnic, with music and other entertainment, runs from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free admission.

 

            Cars and crafts.  Head to Meyer Park in Wind Lake where more than 300 classic and modified cars are expected at the Wind Lake Lions Club annual car show. The show runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with trophies awarded in 24 classes. An arts and crafts fair is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Lions will be serving barbecue chicken dinners starting at 10 a.m.
