March Into Fun This Weekend

The first weekend in March brings bluegrass, jazz and a little bit of science education. Come along for these suggestions from Real Racine.

It's March already!  This Racine County weekend's variety runs from bluegrass to jazz to a little bit of science education. Come along for these suggestions from Real Racine.

Start with banjos and fiddles.  The weekend starts Thursday, March 7 with the bluegrass acoustic jam at Apple Holler, 5006 S. Sylvania Ave., Yorkville. Bring you instrument or just drop by to listen starting at 6 p.m. It's free. These jam sessions are held the first and third Thursdays of the month.

Return to the Jazz Age.  The annual Tribute to Bix Fest runs Thursday through Sunday at the Racine Marriott Hotel, 7111 Washington Ave., Mount Pleasant. Fans of 1920s jazz come from far and wide to honor jazz great Bix Beiderbecke, listen to live music, attend lectures and swap records. Festival details are at www.bixfest.com or 847-996-0246.

Music, food and fund raising.  The Take a Taste Out of Crime fund-raiser returns Friday at Infusino's Banquet Hall, 3201 Rapids Drive. From 5 to 9 p.m., you can sample 60 to 80 varieties of wines and beers with more than 40 varieties of gourmet cheese. CSQ provides live jazz and there is a silent auction, raffles and an opportunity to get autographs from Green Bay Packers great Gilbert Brown. Tickets are $40 at the door. This event benefits Neighborhood Watch of Racine.

A free concert.  The Racine Symphony Orchestra presents a free concert by violinist Sharan Leventhal at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 716 College Ave. Leventhal, who was RSO's guest artist last fall, will be joined by RSO Director Pasquale Laurino and pianist Paulina Zamora. Spinning for science.  Learn how gyroscopes work at Saturday's "Super Top Gyroscopes" presentation at the Spinning Top and Yo-Yo Museum,. 533 Milwaukee Ave., Burlington. It starts at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call 262-763-3946 for reservations.

Marshmallow art!  Entries will be accepted starting next Tuesday, March 12 for the Racine Art Museum's fourth annual International PEEPS Competition. Artistic creations, made from PEEPS candy, will be on display at the museum, 441 Main St., later this month. Visit the RAM website for an entry form and details. www.ramart.org

Time's running out!  The early bird deadline for The Color Run Racine is next Friday, March 15. The special early rate is $40 per person, or $35 per person for groups of four or more that register together. Participants receive a t-shirt, bag of color and other souvenir items.
