Rep. Cory Mason Wants Residents to Attend Budget Hearing on April 11.

He is disappointed that only four have been scheduled with so much at stake.

Though much of the state's attention over the past six weeks has been focused on the Governor's budget "repair" bill, we now must also turn our attention to the Governor's proposed biennial budget, which will set Wisconsin's priorities and values for the next two years. You can find good information about Governor Walker's proposed budget here from the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau.

I learn more about what's in the proposed budget every day, but so far, the picture is bleak. Gov. Walker's proposed budget will have a dramatic and devastating impact on our schools, our seniors, our health care system, our communities, our environment, and the ability of local governments to provide quality services. Gov. Walker's proposed budget cuts $1.7 billion from our K-12 education system, would force seniors using the popular and cost-effective SeniorCare program into the cumbersome and costly Medicare Part D program instead, and would make higher education at our UW and Technical College campuses even harder to obtain and afford.

Disappointingly, even with so much at stake for our state in this budget for our community, legislative Republicans have scheduled only four public hearings on the budget. This is the fewest number of budget hearings in the past 25 years. And none of those four hearings are scheduled anywhere near Racine.

The budget hearing closest to Racine is in West Allis, at State Fair Park, Expo Center, 8200 W. Greenfield Avenue, on Monday, April 11th from 10am-6pm. I'’m disappointed that Republican leadership has not scheduled  a budget hearing in Racine, and have only scheduled a hearing during a time when most people work and might not be able to attend. If you are available, I encourage you to attend the hearing in West Allis on Monday the 11th.

Whether you are able to attend the budget hearing or not, I welcome your comments about the proposed state budget or any other matter of importance to you. Please feel free to contact me at (608) 266-0634 or Rep.Mason@legis.wi.gov if you have questions, concerns, or I can be of assistance to you.
