Stalking Case Continues for Sturtevant President Steve Jansen

The stalking case against Sturtevant Village President Steve Jansen is wending its way through the court system with possible resolution next year.

Jansen was charged last February and pleaded not guilty to one count of felony stalking, which carries a potential $10,000 fine and/or up to three years, six months in prison.

Since then, there have been status conferences on the case in Racine county courts. The next hearing will be Feb. 15, 2013, a year after the original arrest.

Jansen said that he has complied with court requirements and hopes for a conclusion to the case next year. Jansen was ordered to have no contact with the woman he’s accused of stalking and to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Jansen said people have been supportive as the case continues.

“For the most part, people have been supportive. They know I’ve got a good heart,” he said.

According to the criminal complaint filed last spring, Jansen and the woman, who lives in Mount Pleasant, were dating but she broke it off in January 2011. After the break-up, emails and text messages from Jansen continued, despite several warnings from both the woman and police to stop.

In January 2012, the woman told police she feared for her safety and was afraid to leave her home to work in her yard or walk her dog. On Feb. 2, Jansen allegedly sent the victim another email with statements about insanity and the definition of insanity and how that might pertain to him. The email also included a link to a YouTube video.

When Mount Pleasant Police contacted Jansen on Feb. 5, the criminal complaint alleges, he admitted to sending emails, letters and leaving rambling messages for the victim on her voicemail but that he didn't really expect her to respond.
