South Shore Fire Chief Announces His Retirement

Chief William Bouma will retire as of Oct. 4.

Saying he just knew it was time, South Shore Fire Chief William Bouma announced Friday that he will retire on Oct. 4.

That date coincides with Bouma's 13th anniversary with the department. Prior to coming to Mount Pleasant, which turned into South Shore after the 2009 consolidation agreement with Sturtevant, he was with the Waukegan, Ill., fire department for 20 years.

"There have been struggles inside and outside of the department that impacted this decision," he told Patch. "There comes a time when you look in the mirror and just know it's time."
