Using a Fake Name Leads to Drug Charges, Police Say

Suspect, 19, has a backpack with marijuana and $2,000 inside when she's with a Chicago man in a parking lot.

What's in a name? Everything when a 19-year-old homeless woman allegedly used a fake name when Mount Pleasant police questioned her about a burglary.

Brittany L. Brest was charged in Racine County Circuit Court Monday with one count of obstructing an officer and one count of possession of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. If convicted, she faces up to 15 months in prison and $11,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called to the Racine County Opportunity Center Saturday, where they found Brest and Anton Redick, 21, in the parking lot. There had been a burglary reported in the area recently and the two were asked for their names, but both reportedly gave fake names.

Officers said they were unable to find information on the fake names, but one investigator was able to contact Redick’s mother. She gave his name and date of birth to police. Redick then told the officer he has a learning disability.

Police reports indicate Redick referred to Brest by her real name so she was confronted by the officers. She supposedly said Redick told her to lie about her name to police.

Both were placed under arrest and officers said they found marijuana and $2,000 cash inside a backpack Brest had been carrying.

Brest will make her initial appearance Nov. 8. Redick is being held in Racine County Jail on $250 bond.
