Blackhawks over Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Some members of the U.S. military were busy in Miami Thursday night as they conducted exercises in Downtown Miami.

CBS4 captured video of Black Hawk helicopters flying over the city as part of a joint military training exercise.

Thursday night’s training took place near the Stephen P. Clark Center in Miami and a nearby Metrorail station where troops could be seen rappelling from the military choppers onto the Metrorail station platform.

Argus:SUPERDRONE

Paranoid delusions about black helicopters hovering over an area will soon be out of date: The latest scary spy apparatus lives 20,000 feet up, turning 30 or more square miles into live video sharp enough to spot individual people walking around.

The system is called ARGUS, after the 100-eyed god of Greek myth, and fittingly, it works by hooking together hundreds of inexpensive image sensors like those found in mobile phones. The non-classified parts were featured last week in an episode of the PBS show “Nova” all about drones and surveillance (the ARGUS segment starts at the half-hour mark).

ARGUS has appeared in earlier reports, but in a much less detailed fashion. The “Nova” program shows how it might actually appear in action.

Yiannis Antoniades of BAE Systems, the British company that makes the ARGUS system (with help and funding from DARPA), told PBS that although BAE would have liked to design a whole new sensor, it was cheaper and more practical to use an array of smaller, off-the-shelf ones.

The full ARGUS image, with close-ups.

The current version uses 368 five-megapixel sensors, for a total of 1.8 gigapixels. But unlike other gigapixel camera systems, this one doesn’t record still images — it produces video. That means that from four miles up, it can watch a roughly circular area up to six miles wide, tracking every car and person in real time.

The amount of data produced by the system is, naturally, immense, around 6 petabytes per day according to earlier reports.

ARGUS has yet to be deployed, although there were plans to send three to Afghanistan onboard a helicopter-like hovering unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) called the Hummingbird, now defunct. The future of the system is, for now, classified.

Mayor Bloomberg with friends!

Jason Mattera, as reported by NewsHounds Ellen, is a James O’Keefe wannabe who has an unsavory history of homophobia and other assorted right wing nastiness including a CPAC speech in which smeared President Obama as a cocaine user. He recently tried to confront NY Mayor Bloomberg about his “hypocrisy” in advocating gun control while utilizing the services of an armed guard – the need for which was underscored by Mattera’s histrionic attempt to get in the mayor’s face. Mattera is upset that Bloomberg’s security detail deftly moved him away from the mayor. So Fox News, as a mouthpiece for those who oppose gun control, embraced Mattera. Last night, his cause was taken up on Hannity. This morning’s Fox & Friends showed their support for this “investigative journalist.” Don’t ya love the smell of right wing solidarity in the morning!

As the chyron proclaimed “Caught on Camera, Mattera Confronts Bloomberg on Gun Control,” Gretchen Carlson introduced the video done by a young – ROFLMAO – “investigative reporter.” (So I guess that’s the phrase that Gretch will use if doing a piece on Michael Moore?)  She reported that Mattera wanted to know why he “will not have the right to defend himself but others can’t or can.” She urged viewer to watch the “confrontation.” Before the video began, there was a visual of a police car flashing light with the words “Hypocrisy Alert.”

As the video played, the Fox chyron read “Explosive Exchange, Mattera Accosted Over Gun Control Question.“  While the argument can be made that the agitated Mattera was bullying Bloomberg, they chyron provided more support for Mattera: “Surrounded by Security, Bloomberg’s Armed Bodyguards Bully Journalist.” ROFLMAO – Jason Mattera is a “journalist?”

After Steve Doocy alluded to Mattera’s soda, Carlson (on cue) “explained” that he was making fun of Mayor Bloomberg’s ban on large sodas because he “thought that” (her eyes widened in incredulity) “sugar was not good and healthy.”

So there you have it. In the Orwellian world of Fox News, “journalist” Mattera is another conservative victim of bullying by the hypocritical forces of intolerance. And sugary soda, a major contributor to obesity, isn’t bad for your health. They say so on Fox & Friends – so that, as was said in Plan 9 from Outer Space, “proves it!”

And speaking of hypocrisy – Do ya think that if Michael Moore had done the same thing to Mayor Giuliani, the pals would have been as supportive?
