O&H 'Thrilled' That Kringle Will Be State Pastry

Gov. Scott Walker will sign the 2013-2015 budget Sunday, at the same time designating the Kringle as our official state pastry.

Elected officials from both sides of the aisle are lobbying for the Kringle to be named the official state pastry of Wisconsin when Gov. Scott Walker signs the new biennium budget into law.

In a letter to Walker, Democratic Reps. Cory Mason (Racine), and Tod Ohnstad (Kenosha) with Sen. Bob Wirch. D-Kenosha, and Republican Reps. Tom Weatherston (Caledonia), Samantha Kerkman (Powers Lake), and Speaker Robin Vos say how much the designation will mean to the communities of Southeast Wisconsin.

In part, the letter reads. "Designating the Kringle as Wisconsin's Official State Pastry would not only boost Racine's economy, it would put Racine and Southeast Wisconsin on the culinary map. There is no other state that has such a strong tradition of the Kringle pastry."

Sara Willing, spokesperson for O&H Bakery, agrees, saying the Kringle is an iconic part of Racine's history.

"We've been making Kringle since 1949 so to have the Kringle named the state's official pastry is really exciting," she told Patch Thursday.

Walker is expected to sign the budget into law Sunday in Pleasant Prairie.
