Fall Is Budget Time and Your Local Municipality Needs You!

Your local municipality sets the 2013 budget over the next two months. This is your chance to get involved with the process.

Ahhh, fall. Football's fly and leaves litter our lawns. And your local elected officials buckle down with staff to work on the 2013 budget. This is where you as a citizen can have major impact on the shape of your Village or Town.

Don't like how much is spent on DPW, make that known. Do you think your Village should have a new police officer, or should start preparing now for replacing aging fire equipment? This is the time to speak your mind.

Each municipality has working sessions, either as part of a committee meeting or as a stand alone meeting. You should attend these and make your concerns and recommendation. Be sure to request a copy of a proposed budget from your local clerk so you can see how the budget is allocated.

Each municipality also holds a public hearing on the budget as per State law before the budget is adopted.

I can not stress enough just how much your local officials want and need your input. It is your Village, and you do have a say. But you have to participate in the process.

I hope to see more of you at meetings in the next couple of months!

Great job Chris and happy budget season! Heather and I rant about this constantly (to one another). I can't tell you how many times I've been at a municipal board meeting where I've been the only person (other than employees or elected officials) when they talk about spending taxpayer dollars. Oh wait, that just happened on Monday night at the Caledonia Village Board meeting. It's a pet peeve of mine really.
My favorite saying is that democracy is not a spectators sport. People need to understand how their government works/what doesn't work and how you arrive at the decisions you do. I would love to see more insight from elected officials about how they arrive at the decisions they do and what influences their decisions.

It kinda blows having to choose between Caledonia meetings and RUSD but getting RUSD to change anything is darn near impossible

@Chris - THANK YOU! I've written about this before, but it's nice to have an elected official chime in. Denise and I grumble and grouse about the lack of involvement all the dang time. I want to see residents in the seats at meetings and not just when an issue lands in your yard. Be involved!

@Chris ... I do sincerely applaud your focus, effort and concern to provide the best services to the community you serve with limited [and ever shrinking resources] guided by a set of assumptions and other considerations call .. a budget.
Makes many wonder how the present Administration has run the Country without a budget for nearly 4 years and has not shed 1 tear in doing so. 4 more years of Obama, the Amateur?

Rees; When the Sacred village Board cloaked the building of a new Village hall for over $17 million,Read More it was brought to there attention to build TWO new fire stations. One south, one north. Instead they built the Taj Mahal and a distance fire station. Maybe the two remaining Trustees could orate their decision for the residents.

Hmm "make a stronger Wisconsin than ever". Yup Scottie, 44th in the country is the beat!Read More Soon 50th? Inverted math? "The recall brought us closer together" You won spending 6-1 using a majority of out of state $, had 5 times longer to campaign and won because one side failed to confront the second battle of recalls as a whole vs Scotties recall. "For decades we will be able to look up public officials and hopefuls, teachers, neighbors, interviewees" so much for freedom of speech & the recall Scott Walker used to become Milwaukee's head of busted political officials. Scott you were hired to represent all citizens of Wisconsin.
