The Racine Art Museum is revealing their latest project, RAM on the Road, which is designed to be a portable art class. Also known as Wustum on Wheels, the van will be filled with art supplies and materials for kids who can't make it to the museum for classes.

This project started by having well-known artist, Bill Reid, paint the outside of the vehicle to give it an artistic and recognizable look to the community.

“RAM asked me to do the artwork which is very cool as I’m usually known for creating metal sculptures,”  said Reid.

Deciding what to paint on the van was a group effort that included Reid and RAM employees. Reid’s signature metal sculptures are often of whimsical animals, so its no surprise that animals play a big part in these paintings as well. One side of the van is painted to represent the Wustum Museum and the history of Racine, and the other side reflects the different types of art exhibits you will find at the Racine Art Museum.

According to Tricia Blasko, RAM’s Curator of Education, “The purpose of RAM on the Road is to bring art enrichment into the lives of Racine County residents and to encourage everyone to visit the local museums.”

Blasko is hopeful this service will be available is surrounding communities in the near future.

The van will drive to schools, retirement homes, daycares and assisted living communities stocked with art supplies for projects that relate to the current exhibits that are on display at the museums. Artists in the van will also have iPads to show examples and demonstrations to help spark creativity.

On May 13th, RAM on the Road will make its first artistic trip to downtown Racine for Kids Day at RAM from 3:00-6:00pm. At this event, kids and their families will discover exactly what the art museum on wheels has to offer.

There are already three trips to local organizations scheduled after this appearance. If you are interested in RAM on the Road visiting you, please contact Tricia Blasko at 262-636-9573.
