Patch Guide: Getting Rid of Junk in the Villages

Sometimes it is hard to determine how to dispose of certain items. Each Village has its own contract concerning waste management and the rules often vary. Here is a guide to help you sort out the confusing trash.

Cardboard – For all Villages, cardboard is not allowed in landfills. Corrugated & Container Board (such as cereal boxes) are to be recycled. Fold or cut form pieces no larger than 3'x3' and lay pieces together. Tie in bundles 10” thick or less. OR place in a brown paper bag, place bag on top or next to recycle bin or place neatly into another box no bigger than 3'x3'.

Concrete/Asphalt - For all Villages, contact either Payne & Dolan 262.884.9644 or Azarian Wrecking (262) 637-4153

Batteries - For all Villages, contact a local battery store (Batteries Plus) regarding trade-ins or disposal.

Florescent Light Bulbs – For all Villages, contact Vans Electric at (262) 632-7241 for disposal and current fee. Or take to a Hazardous Colelction on designated days (see schedule below).

Medications – For all villages, medications should NOT be flushed. They should be brought to a designated Hazardous Waste Collection Event (see schedule below).

Motor Oil

  • Sturtevant - Bring to a scheduled Hazardous Waste Collection Event 
  • Mount Pleasant - Bring waste oil to the Mount Pleasant DPW building at 8700 Campus Drive. Use the South driveway. Residents must empty their own containers.
  • Caledonia - Waste oil may be taken to the Village's waste oil drop off site located directly behind the safety building at 6900 Nicholson Road. Pick up the key for the site at the Police Dispatch window. A driver's license or other appropriate ID is required. You will not be allowed to drop off waste oil after 5pm (4pm in the winter). Effective January 1, 2011 – oil filters will NOT be allowed in the landfill. They can be disposed in the dumpster labeled for oil filters at the waste oil drop site.

Appliances

  • Sturtevant - Bring to Sturtevant Drop Off Site located at the end of 87th Street, north of Durand. Hours are as follows: June 15 – August 24 open Wednesdays 10:45am-2:30pm & 3pm-6:45pm and August 29 – November 16 open Mondays and Wednesdays 9:45am-1:30pm & 2pm-5:45pm. There will be a fee. Schedule a pick up at the cost of $40 per item and a permit is required through the Village Clerk's Office (262) 886-7201 or call one of the vendors listed under Caledonia. 
  • Mount Pleasant - Call Veolia at (800) 232-0860 to schedule a pick up. There will be a $25 fee. Residents can also call one of the vendors listed below.
  • Caledonia - The following appliance are NOT allowed in the landfill. Vendors listed below will pick them up usually with for a fee. Large appliances are: refrigerator, stove, freezer, washer, dryer, window air conditioner, dishwasher, dehumidifier, microwave and water heater):

Yard Waste

  • Sturtevant - Bring to Sturtevant Drop Off Site located at the end of 87th Street, north of Durand. Hours are as follows: June 15 – August 24 open Wednesdays 10:45am-2:30pm & 3pm-6:45pm and August 29 – November 16 open Mondays and Wednesdays 9:45am-1:30pm & 2pm-5:45pm. The site accepts leaves, brush, branches and tree stumps. Branches and limbs no larger than 4” in diameter and 4' in length. Yard waste pickup will be the 4th Monday in April, 2nd Monday in May and the 2nd and 4th Mondays in October & November. Yard waste is to be placed in clear plastic bags only and set on curb by 6am. Bags will not be taken if garbage is present. Brush must be bundled and/or tied and not exceed 4' in length.

  • Mount Pleasant -The village compost site is located off Hwy 20 on West Road. The site accepts yard waste, garden waste, leaves and brush. The site opens in April through November. Hours of operation are Wednesdays 12pm-4pm and Saturdays 9am-4pm. Call the village at (262) 664.7800 for further information.

  • Caledonia - Yard waste includes leaves, brush, branches and grass clippings. Residents are encouraged to keep grass clippings on their lawns. Yard waste must be kept out of garbage. The yard waste drop off site is located behind the Safety Building at 6900 Nicholson Road. The site is seasonal; please call for days and hours. Tree branches are to be cut to a maximum diameter of 20” and a maximum of 6' in length. This site is ONLY for Caledonia residents.

Building Materials

  • Sturtevant - Bring to Sturtevant Drop Off Site located at the end of 87th Street, north of Durand. Hours are as follows: June 15 – August 24 open Wednesdays 10:45am-2:30pm & 3pm-6:45pm and August 29 – November 16 open Mondays and Wednesdays 9:45am-1:30pm & 2pm-5:45pm.
  • Mount Pleasant - One 32 gallon waste can per week, no more than 50lbs and no longer than 6 feet tall.
  • Caledonia - Contact Veolia Environmental Services at (800) 232-0860 or Kestral Hawk Landfill at (262) 884-7097 for disposal.

Carpet

  • Sturtevant -Bring to Sturtevant Drop Off Site located at the end of 87th Street, north of Durand. Hours are as follows: June 15 – August 24 open Wednesdays 10:45am-2:30pm & 3pm-6:45pm and August 29 – November 16 open Mondays and Wednesdays 9:45am-1:30pm & 2pm-5:45pm.
  • Mount Pleasant - Rolled up and tied no longer than 4 feet and no more than 50lbs. 4 rolls per week limit.
  • Caledonia - Rolled up and tied no longer than 4 feet and no more than 50lbs. 4 rolls per week limit.

TVs/Monitors – For all villages, TVs and computer monitors can be taken to Goodwill Industries. They recycle or repair so they also take broken items. Please call Goodwill Industries for further info (262) 554-8522.

Tires – For all Villages, contact a local tire store, car dealership or Kestral Hawks Landfill (on Oakes Road) (262) 884-7097 for disposal.

Mattresses/Furniture/Bulk

  • Sturtevant - Bulk items such as sofas, chairs, mattresses, bed frames, recliners, toilets, desks can be picked up by appointment only on the 3rd week of the month. A permit is required from the Village Clerk's Office and the fee is $25. One item at a time is allowed. Or bring to Sturtevant Drop Off Site located at the end of 87th Street, north of Durand. Hours are as follows: June 15 – August 24 open Wednesdays 10:45am- 2:30pm & 3pm-6:45pm and August 29 – November 16 open Mondays and Wednesdays 9:45am-1:30pm & 2pm-5:45pm.

  • Mount Pleasant - Call (800) 232-0860 to schedule pickup. Call by noon on Friday for a pick up the following Monday. No fee.

  • Caledonia - Put out with normal trash days per Veolia Environmental Services (800) 232-0860
