A Great Day for a Sausage Race for United Way

Local business leaders organized and participated in a Klement's Racing Sausage event today which benefited United Way of Racine County.

They got close to their goal, but the afternoon didn't fall short of fun.

United Way, local business leaders and the Klement's Racing Sausages enjoyed the summer-like weather on Oct. 6 during a benefit lunch and Sausage Race. Through the sale of lunch items (including Klement’s Sausages, of course) and raffle tickets, proceeds benefited United Way of Racine.

The goal for the afternoon was $3,000, and they came in a little short at $2,200. United Way’s 2011 campaign goal is $5.25 million.

Adorning the Italian Sausage outfit was Dave Brown of Carpetland (first place). Chris Antonneau from David Insurance ran as the Spicy Chorizo (second place). Claire Weslaski representing Image Management gave the group some Polish flair (third place). From Alliant Physical Therapy Group, Chad Novasic, was the All-American Hotdog. And slotted as the usual favorite, the Brat, was to be Jeff McKeown of . Unfortunately, there was a costume malfunction with that particular link and he was unable to run in the main event.

According to Tracy Nielsen from Racine United Way, the choosing of the sausages was easy.

“They let Claire pick first, then Dave Brown picked the Italian because that’s what he picks at the Brewers’ games, Chris took the chorizo because he likes to vacation in Mexico and Chad just got stuck with the hot dog,” she laughed.

Klement’s generously donated the costumes for this race. You have probably noticed more and more Sausage Races these days. In fact, it is becoming quite a popular fundraising event. A number of local businesses such as Modine, InSinkErator, Twin Disc, Kranz, Ruud Lighting and others have all had similar races.

United Way funds more than 60 programs in Racine County with the help of fundraisers like today’s race. Volunteers, donations and company contributions help make United Way of Racine County one of the top organizations to create positive change in our community.
