Escaped Prisoner Back Behind Bars

An RCI inmate believed to be a low risk for escape is back behind bars after he ran away from a work detail in June 2012.

A Milwaukee man who escaped from the Racine Correctional Institute in June 2012 is back behind bars.

Darryk Spring, 40, was charged Tuesday in Racine County Circuit Court with a single felony count of escape. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines. Spring's incarceration stems from felony drug charges out of both Milwaukee and Winnebago counties.

According to the criminal complaint, Sturtevant police were called on June 13, 2012 for a report of a suspicious vehicle near the Sturtevant Transitional Facility. The caller reported seeing a man run to the car and get in, then the vehicle drove off. When officers arrived, the car was gone and police came up empty after a search of the area.

The warden told police that Spring was on a work detail because he was considered low risk, the complaint reads. Like all inmates, Spring was provided a rule handbook outlining the terms of his work detail, including the consequences of escape.

A $25,000 warrant and a complaint were filed with the court last September, according to online court records, and Spring was in court Tuesday for his initial appearance.

Court Commissioner Alice Rudebusch Tuesday assigned a $1,000 cash bond and scheduled Spring's preliminary hearing for August 7. Spring remains in the Racine County Jail.
