Neighboring communities like Racine and Caledonia have ordinances governing where sex offenders can live. Sturtevant trustees are looking into having one as well.
Sturtevant trustees are looking into whether or not they should adopt an ordinance governing where sex offenders can live. Trustee Chris Larsen said Tuesday during the Continual Committee meeting that he got the idea after learning about a similar ordinance in Caledonia and reading in The Journal Times about the efforts to pass one in the City of Racine. "I just want to make sure that Sturtevant doesn't become the dumping ground for sex offenders in eastern Racine County," he said. "I'd like feedback on whether or not I should continue researching." The ordinance Larsen is proposing would only apply to offenders determined by a court to be sexually violent who are released under the state's 980 commitment petition. That statute allows the …

The business behind Project Green was revealed by village officials in a notice Friday for a special board meeting Monday.
Sturtevant officials announced Friday that United Natural Foods Inc. is going build a new facility Highways 11 and H. The company's website says it's "North America's leading distributor of natural, organic and specialty products." The new commercial project is expected to add 244 jobs at what had been known Project Green, a development with an estimated value of $32 million. The new facility will be a LEED-certified project, meaning some of the most up-to-date eco-friendly building practices and materials will be used on the building. Headquartered in Providence, RI, the company's site here will probably include both office and warehouse space. Other distribution centers measure from 238,000 square feet to almost 700,000 square feet. …

Details are thin, but officials did confirm that a large new development with an estimated value of $32 million will make its new home at the corner of Highways H and 11.
Some 244 jobs are coming to Sturtevant as part of a new development with an estimated value of $32 million. Village trustees and members of the Community Development Authority Tuesday night approved changing Sturtevant's comprehensive land use plan to put one of the last pieces in place for the development to break ground. Designed to occupy the southwest corner of Highways H and 11, the new tenant—dubbed Project Green for its eco-friendly building plans—is an industrial development. Because the comprehensive plan indicates that parcel is identified for commercial use but zoned for industrial/business park, the officials needed to amend the plan to match the zoning. The executive summary states, "In the opinion of staff and consultants, …

Municipal clerks for Caledonia, Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant say absentee ballot voting strong the first day.
Early in person absentee voting started yesterday in Wisconsin and a steady stream of people voted at polling places in Caledonia, Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant. With both parties pushing voters to cast their absentee ballots early, they see that getting those ballots in early gives their respective parties an advantage and voters are listening. In Sturtevant on Monday afternoon, 70 to 80 people had already voted. “The total number of absentee voters is usually around 80,” said Mary Cole, the village clerk. But during the last presidential election, about 1/3 of their 2,700 voters had voted absentee. Cole said both parties have encouraged absentee voting. “The campaign people are telling people to go out and get it done,” she said. But …

The annual Fireworks Festival at Fireman's Park in Sturtevant is sure to provide family fun, organizers say, and they are still seeking volunteers for the event.
The upcoming annual Fireworks Festival in Sturtevant, a family-friendly event, will feature food, music and entertainment aside from the main event, according to organizers. The festival will begin at 4 p.m. July 3 at Sturtevant's Firemen's Park, off of Charles Street between 90th and Wisconsin streets. And according to organizer Linda Busha, they are still seeking volunteers to make it all happen. Busha said admission to the event is free, but there is a $5 charge for parking on the park grounds. She stressed that carry-ins are discouraged, since food and beverage sales at the park help to pay for the fireworks display. Moreover, she said they have had problems with broken glass in the past. Entertainment will be provided by the Brian …
