A small group of about 25 people gathered Friday afternoon at Monument Square to urge Congressman Paul Ryan to stay the course on immigration reform. Specifically, members of Voces de la Frontera and YES (Youth Empowered in the Struggle) want Ryan to keep backing reforms that keep families together, and they delivered a petition with over 7,000 signatures to Ryan's Racine office to back their point. Kevin Seifert, a spokesperson for Ryan, responded by saying, "Congressman Ryan has spoken about the need for immigration reforms that address the approximately 11 million undocumented individuals already here and that do so in a way that respects the rule of law." They also asked Ryan to stop using terms like "anchor babies," because doing so …

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan plans to hold bilingual town hall meeting in June to take up the issue, saying he wants to fix the immigration system because it's broken, not for any political reasons.
Declaring that the nation's current immigration policy "doesn't work for anyone," U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan said Wednesday he is planning a bilingual town hall meeting in Racine in June to focus on the issue. While this wouldn't be his first bilingual meeting, Ryan's decision to focus on immigration comes at a same time the Republican Party is launching an effort to lure more Hispanic voters. In November, just 27 percent of Hispanics nationwide voted for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and running mate Ryan — and the GOP is trying to improve those numbers. It also comes as Congressional Republicans are divided on how to deal with the controversial issue. Some Republicans, like Ryan, want to make it possible for illegal immigrants …

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, former running mate of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, says that with the election behind him, he's happy to "get back to work" and fight for what he believes in.
Despite taking his lumps in the November election, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan said Tuesday that he has a "moral obligation" to continue fighting for what he believes in. "What do you do when you get knocked down?" he asked "You get back up. You pick yourself up, and go back and fight for what you think is right, what you believe in." Speaking at a town hall meeting in Oak Creek, the former Republican vice presidential candidate joked about the outcome of the race. "Let's just say the election didn't go the way I wanted it to go," he told the crowd of about 180. Still, Ryan said, he will continue to push for immigration reform, a revamp of the tax system, energy legislation and more. In an interview with Patch after the 90-minute listening session…

Valeria Ruiz, an undocumented student who attends Case High School, will be among thousands who will rally in Washington D.C. for immigration reform on Wednesday.
More than 50 Racine area students and adults are traveling Washington D.C. for tomorrow's "Time is Now" rally for immigration reform. A send-off for the group was held Tuesday at the Racine Labor Center. Thousands of undocumented workers are expected to participate in the rally, which will be held on Wednesday. Racine's Youth Empowered in the Struggle group wants to join those putting political pressure on federal legislators and President Barack Obama to pass an immigration reform bill, which is expected to be introduced this week. The Kenosha Democrat is putting together an exploratory committee about whether or not he should challenge Rep. Paul Ryan for the First Congressional District in 2014.
First Congressional District voters could see a rematch in 2014 when Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Janesville, is up for re-election. Kenosha Democrat Rob Zerban announced Wednesday that he is putting together an exploratory committee to vet his chances in another run at Ryan. Zerban's announcement comes on the same day that House of Representatives will vote on Ryan's newest budget, which Zerban describes as gutting Medicare and rewarding wealthy Americans. "Since the election, I have been inundated with phone calls and emails from people all over the First District urging me to come forward again to give the people of Southeast Wisconsin a viable alternative to Paul Ryan," Zerban said in his written release. "My hope is that, over the next few …

President Barack Obama invited Wisconsin's Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) to lunch today at the White House to talk about the budget.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) met with President Barack Obama at the White House this afternoon to talk about the federal budget and tax bills, a meeting that one White House staffer called 'constructive.' According a story in the Washington Post: Topics included tackling the deficit and the president’s proposal to replace the sequester with a deficit reduction package that includes tax increases, the official said. Obama “expressed his desire to continue a dialogue with them in the weeks ahead.” Ryan, chairman of the House budget committee, has been vocal about closing business tax loopholes, not raising taxes on businesses and reining in federal spending. He's also expected to unveil the House GOP budget next week. According to the …

More than 77 federal employees who work in Racine County could potentially be affected by sequester, which is slated to start Friday.
Unless Congress reaches a last-minute agreement on the sequester by Friday, the huge budget cuts slated to kick have the potential to affect more than 77 federal employees in working Racine County. Barring any kind of a deal, the Obama administration will have to impose $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts to military and domestic programs on Friday, according to The New York Times. Those cuts would be the start of $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade. The numbers in the graph above show the number of federal employees in Wisconsin by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment. It compiles the data from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management …

On "Meet the Press," Wisconsin congressman and former Republican vice presidential candidate says Hillary Clinton would have done better job with economy than Obama has.
In his first live television interview since the November election, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan Sunday blasted President Barack Obama for his handling of the economy and said the nation would be in better financial shape if Hillary Clinton were president. Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," the former Republican vice presidential candidate said "we would have fixed this fiscal mess by now" if Clinton had been president, The Huffington Post reported. Clinton, who is secretary of state, ran unsuccessfully against Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary. Clinton is considered the strongest potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, however, she has not indicated whether she would make another run for the nation's highest office. In Sunday's …
