A small group of about 25 people gathered Friday afternoon at Monument Square to urge Congressman Paul Ryan to stay the course on immigration reform. Specifically, members of Voces de la Frontera and YES (Youth Empowered in the Struggle) want Ryan to keep backing reforms that keep families together, and they delivered a petition with over 7,000 signatures to Ryan's Racine office to back their point. Declaring that the nation's current immigration policy "doesn't work for anyone," U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan said Wednesday he is planning a bilingual town hall meeting in Racine in June to focus on the issue. While this wouldn't be his first bilingual meeting, Ryan's decision to focus on immigration comes at a same time the Republican Party is launching an effort to lure more Hispanic voters. In November, just 27 percent of Hispanics nationwide voted for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and running mate Ryan — and the GOP is trying to improve those numbers. Despite taking his lumps in the November election, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan said Tuesday that he has a "moral obligation" to continue fighting for what he believes in. "What do you do when you get knocked down?" he asked "You get back up. You pick yourself up, and go back and fight for what you think is right, what you believe in." Speaking at a town hall meeting in Oak Creek, the former Republican vice presidential candidate joked about the outcome of the race. The Janesville Congressman will hold his first Racine listening session since the 2012 election.
U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan has set a listening session in Racine, his first since running for vice president in the 2012 election. However, Ryan did speak in Caledonia at an event sponsored by the Racine Tea Party about the Obama's Affordable Care Act in January. The meeting will be held from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Cesar Chavez Community Center, 2221 Douglas Ave., in Racine. Ryan said in a news release that he will answer questions, address residents' concerns and discuss major legislative proposals before Congress. More than 50 Racine area students and adults are traveling Washington D.C. for tomorrow's "Time is Now" rally for immigration reform. A send-off for the group was held Tuesday at the Racine Labor Center. Thousands of undocumented workers are expected to participate in the rally, which will be held on Wednesday. Racine's Youth Empowered in the Struggle group wants to join those putting political pressure on federal legislators and President Barack Obama to pass an immigration reform bill, which is expected to be introduced this week. Unless Congress reaches a last-minute agreement on the sequester by Friday, the huge budget cuts slated to kick have the potential to affect more than 77 federal employees in working Racine County. Barring any kind of a deal, the Obama administration will have to impose $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts to military and domestic programs on Friday, according to The New York Times. Those cuts would be the start of $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade. In his first live television interview since the November election, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan Sunday blasted President Barack Obama for his handling of the economy and said the nation would be in better financial shape if Hillary Clinton were president.
