Trustees disagreed over whether or not Wednesday's meeting was properly called and if the village board should have had information beforehand.
**Updated 6:35 p.m. The village board Wednesday appointed former Racine Police Chief Kurt Wahlen as its administrator. The final vote was 4-2 with one abstention from Trustee Gary Feest. Trustees Jerry Garski and Don Schulz voted "no." Schulz explained his vote came predominantly from his issues with Village President Mark Gleason not disclosing Whalen's name to the rest of the board in the days leading up to the meeting. Wahlen will be paid an annual salary of $80,000, and his only benefits will include 24 days of sick time and four weeks of vacation. Under the terms of his two-year contract - with a one year review - Wahlen will not have contributions made into his retirement account and he will not receive health insurance under Mount …

Two dozen residents - a mix of liberals and conservatives - attended Speaker Robin Vos' first listening session in the 63rd Assembly District since the lines were redrawn.
Speaker Robin Vos' first listening session in the new 63rd Assembly District drew a small crowd of about 25 residents from both sides of the aisle. Vos, R-Burlington, visited Mount Pleasant Village Hall, 8811 Campus Drive, Monday. Scheduled to last an hour, Vos stayed an extra half hour to continue the conversations sparked by questions from constituents. Topics jumped all over the map from vouchers to to public transportation and expanding mental health services. Vos said he thinks public education does a great job for the majority of kids, but vouchers give parents another choice for when the public schools can't meet a child's needs. But Vos' former high school teacher, Tim Mocarski, challenged Vos by telling him private school has …

Trustees voted Friday to stay with an option in the state insurance plan, but now have to figure out how to stay within the published levy and keep whole the list of purchases and projects they plugged into the 2013 budget.
Mount Pleasant's insurance savings are projected to be about half of what was possible after it decided to move to a lower-cost option with the state plan instead of a private insurer. The move was made in part to avoid a possible lawsuit from the South Shore firefighters’ union. Representatives from David Insurance and United Healthcare gave a comprehensive presentation to trustees and various village employees Friday about the HRA, but Trustee Karen Albeck said it was just too much too late in the budget process. "Our former president and interim administrator had several meetings over the past few months with other insurance companies," said Trustee Karen Albeck. "No board members knew that the meetings were taking place and trustees …

Voters don't have to wait until Nov. 6 to vote for president — in Wisconsin, they can also vote from Oct. 22 through Nov. 2.
While Election Day isn't until Nov. 6, voters in in the villages — and the rest of Wisconsin — can begin casting their ballots Monday. In-person absentee voting, more commonly referred to as "early voting," begins Monday and continues through Friday, Nov. 2. Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant residents can cast their ballot between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at village hall. Mount Pleasant is at 8811 Campus Drive. Sturtevant is located at 2801 89th Street. Early voting has become increasingly popular over the years, and the village clerks in both municipalities said they expects that trend to continue. Sturtevant saw about 30 percent of total ballots cast in the June recall election done early or by absentee ballot. "We have our …

Eliminating a position will result in savings even if there are more than the two scheduled elections next year.
Mount Pleasant trustees Tuesday generally approved of plans to reorganize the village clerk's office next year. Village Clerk/Treasurer Veronica Rudychev presented her ideas to the Village Board during a budget workshop at Village Hall. Rudychev said she only needs one, full-time deputy clerk to work as her primary backup while also assisting with projects and elections. There are now two full-time deputies, and her plan is to eliminate the second position and hire two, part-time administrative/reception positions at 20 hours a week and an hourly wage of $10 to $15. "Not only will we save on salary, but also on health insurance and other fringe benefits," she told trustees. Savings could range from $7,500 and $24,000 for the year, …

The annual Fireworks Festival at Fireman's Park in Sturtevant is sure to provide family fun, organizers say, and they are still seeking volunteers for the event.
The upcoming annual Fireworks Festival in Sturtevant, a family-friendly event, will feature food, music and entertainment aside from the main event, according to organizers. The festival will begin at 4 p.m. July 3 at Sturtevant's Firemen's Park, off of Charles Street between 90th and Wisconsin streets. And according to organizer Linda Busha, they are still seeking volunteers to make it all happen. Busha said admission to the event is free, but there is a $5 charge for parking on the park grounds. She stressed that carry-ins are discouraged, since food and beverage sales at the park help to pay for the fireworks display. Moreover, she said they have had problems with broken glass in the past. Entertainment will be provided by the Brian …

Participants in the Dirty Dog Mud Run can slosh through a muddy obstacle course in Mount Pleasant. It's not too late to sign up!
Want an excuse to slosh through an obstacle course built through a series of mud pits, and for a good cause? It's coming to you this summer. That's right, the Dirty Dog Mud Run is coming to Mount Pleasant late June, and participants, either to face the physical challenges of the race or just to have fun with friends, still have time to sign up. "It's all about people coming out and having fun and running in the mud," Sean Osborne, race director for Silver Circle Sports Events, said. "The vast majority of our participants show up to have a good time and not necessarily race the course." Osborne said most participants sign up in teams and come up with crazy costumes to sport during the run. The event will begin at 9 a.m. June 30 at the Mount…

Folks interested in learning something about Mount Pleasant can find accurate and up-to-date information now on the village's Wikipedia page.
Before lunch Wednesday, visitors looking for information about Mount Pleasant on Wikipedia would have been pretty disappointed. But now, the village has updated entries that give some history (founded in 1842 more as a political body), a bit about education in the area (Racine Unified, UW-Parkside and Gateway), and an outline of how the municipal government is organized (six trustees and a president). Community Development Coordinator Logan Martin made the Mount Pleasant Wikipedia page more complete after he went looking for an easy source to help him fill out a survey. "I was alerted to how sparse the information was, and, in some cases, incorrect, and decided to update and modify the information," he said. What was only supposed to be a …

Whose fault is it? Patch obtained documents through an open records request that shows multiple errors and omissions in the assessing process from 2008 to 2010. The result was $4.5 million in value not added to the village's assessment and tax rolls.
This is the second of a two-part series on assessor services in the Village of Mount Pleasant. Click here to read the first installment, in which Patch explained how $4.5 million in value was left off the tax rolls. The village says former assessor Ed Potter provided substandard service, and didn't up the assessments for properties with significant remodels or additions. Interim Administrator Ron Meyer told Patch the village wanted to end its relationship with Potter because of substandard service. In February, the village transferred the assessor contract to McHugh and his company, Affiliated Property Valuation Services LLC. "The transfer of the contract was seamless and cost-effective, resulting in the restoration of $4.5 million of tax…

I'm not convinced that you aren't Jo Gleason. Think you just deny it to try to avoid embarrassment for your hubby. But, in any event, you sure are creative. You nearly never write facts, only fiction. As an example, if you attended meetings or knew what you were talking about, you would know that Feest and Albeck disagreed on lots of issues. Feest was not listening to Albeck. Besides, she's gone …   more ›
