You know those really cute Google logo drawings? Well Dylan Hoffman, a student at Prairie School, earned enough votes to beat out the other finalists and now he's won a hefty sum of money for college and his school.
Who knew little Dylan Hoffman's Google doodle would garner so much support, and quite a bit of attention. But he earned it, according to a story in the Journal Times. The seven-year-old Caledonia boy took out his markers and drew a pirate-themed Google logo that has earned him a spot among 50 finalists in their Doodle 4 Google competition. So what did Dylan and his mom, Katherin “I fainted,” Dylan said. His mom, Katharina Hoffman, quickly clarified — he didn’t faint, but he was almost falling down from excitement. “He was kind of shocked a little bit, it’s just quite a bit for a little boy,” said Katherina Hoffman, 37, a project manager. His drawing is titled "Pirate Times," and his description said: If I could travel in time, I'd visit …

The whole school turned out in specially decorated Defender Masks with real-life heroes from South Shore Fire and the Sturtevant Police Departments for an anti-bullying parade.
Schulte Elementary School in Sturtevant has focused all year on what being a hero means. Part of that curriculum includes messages on being a friend and not being a bully. Students, teachers, staff and parents turned out for a year-end parade with real-life heroes from the South Shore Fire and Sturtevant Police Departments. Carrying signs that declared Schulte a bully-free zone and touting their hero status, students and teachers wore masks they'd decorated themselves. "These are their Defender Masks," teacher Linda Haas said. "Being a defender means standing up for one another, including kids in play or homework help and respecting and accepting differences."
Kraig Karson, one of the afternoon personalities from 103.7 Kiss FM, and Hannah Kultgen, a 2005 graduate of St. Catherine's, will provide commentary on the red carpet at Post Prom 2012.
Have you heard? This year's Post Prom red carpet hosts will be Kraig Karson from 103.7 Kiss FM and Hannah Kultgen, a graduate of St. Cat's. This is Karson's first time out, but Kultgen is returning for her second year as co-host. Karson is not afraid to admit that he was not the first choice to co-host the red carpet for Post Prom 2012, but he said he is a little anxious about having to dress up. Wes McKane, one of the morning drive personalities, hosted with Kultgen last year and was asked back, but a scheduling conflict had him turning to Karson. "Wes really wanted to do it so when he told me about how amazing this event is and how much fun he had, I had to say 'yes,'" he told Patch during a phone interview Thursday. "I've looked up the …

The school won a concert from KISS FM and the students had a great afternoon listening to the Wanted, Meghan and Liz and Tom Fiss.
RACINE - 2.3 million votes told three pop bands just how committed the students at Horlick High School are to an anti-bullying campaign, which is the reason why the bands -- The Wanted, Megan & Liz, and Tom Fiss -- rocked their gymnasium on Thursday afternoon. The three bands came to visit the school after they had won a contest by being the top vote getting school. Each voted represented a promise to not bully their classmates. The contest and concert was sponsored by the radio station KISS FM 103.7. And the student body held up their end of the bargain. The girls proposed marriage to the members of the British boy band The Wanted and Tom Fiss, the boys invited Megan & Liz to come down front for a chat and a photo. The screamed, the sang…

Only a few roads in the Renaissance Business Park will completely close for the evening, but we have the routes promgoers will take to help make any travel you do Saturday night a little easier.
One of the great traditions of prom in the greater Racine area is the motorcade from the schools to the post prom celebration. This year, with Post Prom at the SportPlex in Sturtevant, routes, of course, are a little different. The good news is that only a handful of roads will closely entirely between 8 and 11 pm, and those streets are all inside the Renaissance Business Park; Renaissance Blvd., Science Drive, Stellar Avenue, and Enterprise Drive. Lt. Charles Weitzel of the Racine Police Department is leading the coordination, and he said drivers who might be out and about Saturday will be able to travel freely except when the parade of cars is actually using an intersection. "This isn't like the presidential motorcade where we shut down …

Studies suggest that the difficult-to-enter workforce is getting harder for college grads, with a higher percentage of recent grads taking longer to find a job than in years past. Should more students be steered to the trades, starting in high school?
The difficulty that college graduates are having finding jobs has been a trend for some time now, but according to a Rutgers University study released Thursday, more recent grads are worse off. According to the study, 51 percent of students who have graduated college since 2006 have a full-time job, an article on HuffingtonPost.com said. "The situation is even more dire for those who have graduated since 2009," the article said. "Fewer than half of college graduates from those years found their first job within 12 months of graduating, much less than the 73 percent of those who graduated from 2006 to 2008. Those who graduated since 2009 are three times more likely to not have found a full-time job than those from the classes of 2006 …
