Wisconsin Democrats Blast Elections Legislation in Weekly Radio Address

From the Wisconsin Election Watch Election Blog,

On Wednesday, State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Saukville) blasted pending election legislation that is currently considered by Republicans who control both houses of the state Legislature during the Democrats weekly address.

One bill that Zamarripa blasted was Assembly Bill 54 which would standardize early voting hours. She said: “This bill – which would limit early absentee voting – imposes a statewide mandate that takes away local control, makes the jobs of municipal clerks much more difficult, makes voting lines longer and would lower voter turnout across our state. That’s why clerks, local governments and good government groups from across the state registered against this bill – and not a single group registered to support it.”

“Republicans have done everything they can to thwart the will of the people and make themselves untouchable. Evidence shows that a strong majority of early voters are Democratic voters, so Republicans want to limit that even if it causes problems for local clerks,” said Zamarripa .

She concluded her radio address saying: “The agenda Republicans are forcing on our state is harmful and unpopular. It’s no wonder they are so afraid of people voting.”

Wisconsin Election Watch contacted the bill’s author Duey Stroebel (R-Saukville) for comment.   Stroebel said: “Representative Zamarripa’s remarks are inflammatory and not a serious debate on the subject.  The hallmarks of Wisconsin elections are equality and fairness.  Virtually all aspects of Wisconsin elections, from voting procedures, to ballot security, to voting times on Election Day, are standardized statewide to ensure no one citizen is advantaged or disadvantaged in the process.  Unless we are going to vote 24/7, there must be reasonable guidelines.”
