Sick Out Day Will Cost Racine Unified Taxpayers Nearly $500,000

Extra class day tacked onto the end of the school year means staff members will receive an extra day of pay.

June 13 will be the last day of classes in the Racine Unified School District. But, the RUSD Board of Education learned Monday that the extra day carries a price tag of up to $478,000.

The extra day, which is being tacked on to the end of the school year, is necessary to meet state attendance requirements. The day is necessary because nearly 400 teachers, or 25 percent of the district’s teaching staff called in sick on Feb. 17, forcing classes to be canceled. The incident occurred during heated protests at the State Capitol against Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to eliminate most collective bargaining rights from many public sector employees.

Superintendent Dr. Jim Shaw said that because all remaining employees stayed at work, and were paid for that day, there would be additional compensation for the new last day of school.

Responding to Board Member Kim Plache’s question about sick leave, Employee Relations Manager Keri Hanstedt said that there were employees that had legitimate excused absences that day. But Hanstedt added there was “a population that may not have excuses and may not have been ill. We’re currently investigating . . .and may take action.”

The School Board also learned that the unexpected expense must come out of this year’s budget.

The one-day extension was approved on a 7-0 vote.

To Milwaukee Ironworker. You are so brainwashed it is simply unreal. I have never felt so bad for someone. I have re-read every comment left by you, on this and other sites, You are living in complete denial. I do understand your fears of trying to have a career without people holding your hand, not being able to free think, to stand on your own two feet. Maybe if your lucky someday you will be able to figure it out. I doubt it, but i will pray for you. You need all the help you can get. Now, lets just be a little realistic....for every post you have i can counter post. Every picture you have, i have one as well. Every thought you have I have a better one. The biggest difference between us is simple...I am a proud, free thinking, capable, strong, American. You are not, you are not allowed to be those things, if you try the union would send some thug over to break your legs.. You say the TEA Party is irrelevant...we will see, i don't think so. In fact i can think of 5-6 new groups in the last month alone. I would think that indicates growth, not decline. Sorry just the facts. You like to insult Vicki, that's rich, because if you ever listened to her you would know she has ALWAYS defended the private sector unions. You would also know that she has and continues to admit to her stupid actions along time ago. She has admitted it several times on her show. So if you think you are doing harm to her, then you are wrong and need to grow up!

One more question for everyone....does anyone know where the "closed fist" symbol came from? Just a little hint. Google International Socialist Organization. That might be a good start or just google "closed fist" and see what comes up.

Don't know why this page came to mind, but, just got this from the Tea Party Patriots: "They've said: "The Tea Party is not growing. They are not strong. You do not need to worry about how they will react to your vote." "If you do not like what we are doing, and don't vote with us, you should get the hell out." Those sound like words from the White House or Senate leaders don't they? But they're not. These were comments made by Republican House Leadership and their allies behind closed doors." Since I'm here - Duane - you still haven't backed up your claim about our speakers getting paid. No comment? I'd have to say your credibility is at stake. LOL
