Racine Unified Cancels Summer School for July 20 Because of Extreme Heat

Temperatures are expected to reach in the high 90s and could prove dangerous for students.

The Racine Unified School District is closing summer school and Janes Elementary because of the extreme heat expected for Wed., July 20.

Air quality for students walking to and from school combined with the lack of circulation in some buildings could adversely affect the health of some students. To be on the safe side, RUSD is canceling all classes.

Due to the prediction of a heat warning in Racine tomorrow, Racine Unified School District Summer School and Janes Elementary School will not be in session on Wednesday, July 20.

The District has serious concerns about the health of our students in traveling to and from school during this extreme heat and humidity and the poor air quality in some of our buildings due to the lack of air conditioning in most summer school sites.

The District will continue to closely monitor the weather to determine whether it is safe to re-open schools on Thursday, July 21.

Children 18 and under can still receive a free meal at the following community centers:

  • Bryant Center (601 21st Street) – 12-2 p.m.
  • Chavez Center (2221 Douglas Avenue) – 12:30-2:30 p.m.
  • Martin Luther King Center (1134 Dr. MLK Dr.) – 1-3 p.m.
  • Tyler-Domer Center (2301 12th Street) – 12:30-2:30 p.m.
  • Urban League (718 N Memorial Dr) – 12-2 p.m.
