Election Season Means Three Seats For Grabs on Racine Unified Board

Residents can now take out nomination papers for one of three seats for a three-year term.

It's that time of year again. Nomination papers for three seats on the Board of Education are now available for interested residents.

The terms of board members Don Nielsen, Gretchen Warner and Kim Plache will are expiring in April 2012. Nielsen and Warner have served on the board since 2006, while Plache has served since 2009.Β 

Each seat on the board is good for three years and offers $300 per month in compensation, said Stacy Tapp, Unified's director of communication and public information.

Nomination packets can be picked up from Pat Meyer, Deputy Clerk for School Board Elections, at the Unified Administrative Service Center, 3109 Mt. Pleasant St., in Building No. 2.

To make the ballot, candidates must file a Declaration of Candidacy, Campaign Registration Statement and gather 100 signatures. The deadline to file the packets with the required signatures is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012.

People who live in Racine County but outside of the Racine Unified School District are not qualified for signatures. Unified is bordered on the south by the Kenosha/Racine county line, on the north by the Milwaukee/Racine county line and on the west by Interstate 94.

A primary is scheduled for Feb. 21, 2012 if seven or more people declare their candidacy for the board and general elections will take place April 3, 2012.
