Taking On Drunk Driving: Speaker’s Briefing for November 8, 2013

I’m State Representative Robin Vos and this is the Speaker’s Briefing

Drunk driving is a serious problem in Wisconsin. On Tuesday the Assembly passed a series of bills that aim to not only reduce it, but eliminate it altogether.

One piece of legislation mandates that anyone accused of drunk driving appear in court. This holds people accountable and will serve as a reminder of the consequences of driving drunk.

Anyone can make a mistake once. But if a person makes bad choices again and again, there should be harsher penalties. Under the bills we passed, second offense drunk driving is a criminal misdemeanor. Fourth offense is a felony, no matter if they happen 5 or 10 years after the last conviction.

We hope these tougher penalties will help reduce drunk driving, and I look forward to them becoming law.
