Educating our Future: Speaker's Briefing for June 28

I’m State Representative Robin Vos and this is the Speaker’s Briefing.

Wisconsin’s economic future is tied directly to the quality of education received by students from kindergarten through college. Our budget is focused on reforming education to make it more responsive to the needs of students today and for years to come, while still being conscious of the costs to taxpayers.

Our budget increases public school funding by nearly $300 million over the next two years. We are also taking a new look at ways those schools train students for the future. Academic career planning can help our students make the most of the time they spend in the classroom, preparing for their plans after high school and while in college.

By expanding the popular School Choice program across the state, we will give families the freedom to choose an education that meets their child’s needs. The program will be held to high standards, just like public schools, including standardized testing and requiring teachers have at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school. More choice schools will be great for kids and great for Wisconsin.

We’ve also instituted a tuition freeze at University of Wisconsin System schools to ensure that every family has access to affordable higher education.
