Snow Sculpting Postponed But Ice is Still Nice
OK, winter is FINALLY here! Real Racine has suggestions for things to do inside and outside.
As of late this week, winter FINALLY arrived in Southeastern Wisconsin. Cross-country skis and snowmobiles have officially displaced golf clubs and bicycles. Here are some suggestions for things to do outside and inside in Racine County.
Ice carving is still on. Recent balmy temperatures postponed the Wisconsin State Snow Sculpting Championship until next weekend (Jan. 20-22.) But, a planned ice carving event – known formally as Downtown Carves its Niche – is still on for Saturday, Jan. 14 starting at 10 a.m. A dozen local and regional ice carvers will fashion sculptures from 300-pound ice blocks at various locations along Main and Sixth streets. Come down and see them.
A behind-the-scenes look. Admission is free at the Racine Art Museum, 441 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. At 2 p.m. artist Kim Cridler will guide visitors through a behind-the-scenes tour of her exhibit “Kim Cridler: My Wisconsin Home.” Details at www.ramart.org

Kick some tires. A sure cure for cabin fever is The Journal Times 22nd Annual New Car Show at Festival Hall, 5 Fifth St. Area dealers will display the latest car and truck models. Show hours are noon to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. There is no admission charge.
Kids and cooking. Learn more about your food and healthy eating at Kids in the Kitchen presented next Tuesday, Jan. 17 by Heidi Fannin, co-founder of Eat Right Racine. Heidi will share her passion for healthy food and invite kids on stage to prepare some simple and delicious snacks. The program starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Golden Rondelle Theatre, 1525 Howe St. Because seating is limited, advance reservations are required. Call 262-260-2154 or email rondelle@scj.com. Plan ahead for laughs. The Irish Comedy Tour comes to Memorial Hall, 72 Seventh St., next Friday, Jan. 20. Comedians Derek Richards, Mike McCarthy and Jim Campbell promise the raucous fun of a Dublin pub with side-splitting humor. Doors open at 6 p.m. for samples of authentic Irish cuisine.
