Return to the Jazz Age

Jazz music, theater and a film celebrating Racine County's barn quilts are among this weekend's picks from Real Racine.

March is a great time to celebrate music, theater and film in Racine County. Here are our weekend suggestions.

The Jazz Age is back!  A weekend celebration of 1920s-era jazz music takes place at the Racine Marriott Hotel, 7111 Washington Ave., Mount Pleasant. "A Tribute to Bix" honors the legacy of legendary jazz innovator Bix Beiderbecke. It includes jazz concerts at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10 and at noon Sunday, March 11. There are also lectures, rare films, a jam session and a record spin. Tickets for individual events range from $5 to $25. For details, call 847-996-0246 or visit www.bixfest.com

Live theater continues.  "The Curious Savage" continues its run at the Racine Theatre Guild, 2519 Northwestern Ave. This comedy centers around a widow who tries to give away her fortune to help people realize their dreams to the dismay of her grown children. This weekend's performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. Barn quilts on film. The story of Racine County's 21 beautiful barn quilts is told in a new film called "Quilts on Barns. The Beauty of Rural Art." It will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Golden Rondelle Theater, 1525 Howe St. Filmmaker Nicholas Ravnikar will be joined by Kathi Wilson, the project's originator and curator, and Dave Blank, Real Racine CEO. Big voices.  The Choral Arts Society of Southeastern Wisconsin's concert, "Twice Inspired" is at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 716 College Ave. The 60-voice group will perform Bach's "Magnificat in D" and John Rutter's "Requiem." Tickets, available at the door, are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for students. A $40 family ticket will admit two adults plus children.

An evening with the Irish.  Celtic Night for Literacy presents an evening of Irish food and entertainment next Friday, March 16 at the Racine Marriott Hotel, 7111 Washington Ave. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. A corned beef and cabbage, cod or vegetarian dinner is served at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. The Garlic Mustard Pickers will provide Celtic and Irish music and the Glencastle Irish Dancers will add to the colorful celebration. This event benefits the Racine Literacy Council. Tickets are $35 each. Tables of 10 may be reserved. For reservations by Monday, March 12, visit www.racineliteracy.com or call 262-632-9495.
