Children's Theatre, Fish Watching and a Fall Harvest Festival

            The play’s the thing.  The Racine Children’s Theatre kicks off its 80th season on Friday, Oct. 12 with “There’s a Monster in My Closet!” This hour-long show is presented twice Friday and three times on Saturday and Sunday at the Racine Theatre Guild, 2519 Northwestern Ave. All general admission seats are just $6.             History in Union Grove.  The Half Point Historical Reenactment is Saturday and Sunday at the Racine County Fairgrounds in Union Grove. Re-enactors, wearing period costume, will share the early 19th century period when the Union Grove area was the “half point” on a trip from Racine to Burlington. Admission is free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Sandwiches, salads and snacks will be available for purchase. The event is sponsored by the Union Grove Lions and Kiwanis clubs.

            Ride the Root! Everyone is invited to enjoy Racine’s bicycle trails and benefit local schools and nonprofit groups. Registration for Ride the Root starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at North Beach and staggered starts begin at 9 a.m. The event is presented by RACINEkids.org. The registration fee is $25 per person or $20 for groups of four or more. Details at www.therootriver.com

 

            See some fish. The Root River Steelhead Facility open house is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Racine’s Lincoln Park. You’ll have a chance to watch some big salmon make their way up the fish ladder, tour the facility and participate in workshops on fly tying, casting and fishing techniques. It’s all free.             Big fun in Waterford. Pack up the car and spend Sunday in Waterford at the Fall Harvest Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Ten Club Park and Whitford Park. Activities include a chili cook-off, a craft show, canoe rides, pumpkin painting and a pumpkin pie eating contest. The Waterford Lions Club’s famous chicken barbecue will be served all day.             A friendly reminder.  Save money by registering before midnight Friday for the Real Racine Skeleton Skamper Half-Marathon, 5K Run/Walk and Kids Trick-or-Treat Walk.

The half-marathon fee is $40 until next midnight Friday. It then goes to $50. The 5K fee is $20 (with a guaranteed t-shirt) before midnight Friday. It increases to $25. Register online at www.skeletonskamper.com or at www.active.com.
