A Winter Jazz Weekend in Racine County

            Starting early. You can get a jump start on your weekend with a jazz concert by Hobby Horse with Racine native and renowned saxophonist Dan Kinzelman. This jazz trio, known for using nontraditional instruments, is on a U.S. tour and making a stop at Racine's Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church, 625 College Ave., at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10.             More jazz on the way.  Jean's Jazz Series 2013 kicks off Saturday at the Racine Theatre Guild, 2519 Northwestern Ave. First up this year is the Kal Bergendahl Project, which combines smooth jazz with soulful pop music. Opening the show is RAR, a trio from Milwaukee that plays a little bit of everything.  The show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $5 for students.             High energy.  Head to Burlington for the Chocolate City Showcase, an all-day competition of singing, dancing high school show choirs. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Burlington High School, 400 McCanna Parkway. The top six choirs compete in the evening finals. All-day admission is $10 for ages 6 and older.

 

            Time is running out.  Hurry in to catch "High Fiber: Recent Large Scale Acquisitions in Fiber" at the Racine Art Museum, 441 Main St. This exhibit of  larger-than-life size sculptures by contemporary artists are created with techniques like weaving and knotting. The museum promises that these works will delight the eye and engage the mind. RAM is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Visit wwwramart.org

 

            The Big Chill is next week.  Unseasonably warm temperatures have pushed The Big Chill back a week. Mark your calendar and plan to head to Monument Square starting at 5 p.m. next Friday, Jan. 18. You'll see 16 two-person teams creating works of art out of giant blocks of snow in the Wisconsin State Snow Sculpting Championship. Visitors can vote for their favorite. The winners will be announced at 2 p.m. next Sunday. Downtown Carves its Niche, an ice sculpture exhibit will be in front of businesses along Main and Sixth streets next weekend. It's all free.
