A Ride in the Country and a Walking Ghost Tour

These sunny, fall days are perfect to just get away in Racine County.

Sunny fall days are just perfect for a lot of things -- rides in the country, fall produce shopping, photography or just getting away from the daily routine. Here are some of our picks for mid-October:

Quilts on barns.  Racine County celebrates the beauty of rural, homespun artwork with quilt patterns painted on 21 barns scattered throughout the county. The Racine County Quilts on Barns Project was launched in 2008 to acquaint visitors and residents with the area's rich agricultural heritage. Volunteers painted the colorful 8-by-8-foot quilt patterns that can be easily spotted from the road. The barn quilts are found from the lakeshore to rustic roads. To learn more, visit www.quiltsonbarns.com or stop by the Real Racine Visitor Center, 14015 Washington Ave., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Downtown ghosts?  Downtown Racine may or may not host ghosts and other strange occurrences. One way to find out is to take the Walking Ghost Tour sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Racine County. The three-hour tours into Racine's history and folklore are held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16 and also on Oct. 22, 23 and 30. All tours start at 7 p.m. at Circa Celeste, 619 Wisconsin Ave. The price is $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 8 through 12. There is a $5 surcharge for tickets at the door. Children under 8 are not allowed on the tour. All children must accompanied by an adult. Because space is limited, reservations are strongly recommended. Call 262-886-9612 or email: info@volunteercenterofracine.org.

Shop 'til you drop. There will be shopping opportunities galore at the 8th Annual Union Grove Elementary School Craft Fair on Saturday, Oct. 15.  The fair, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Union Grove Elementary School, promises more than 100 booth full of items in two gyms. There are also cash raffles, basket raffles and great food. Proceeds go the Union Grove Elementary Parent Teacher Organization.
