A Perfect Summer Weekend

A perfect summer weekend is shaping up in Racine County. Real Racine has some great suggestions for you and your family.

        A perfect summer is shaping up in Racine County.  Expect sunshine, outdoor fun, music and more. Here are some ideas.

 

            On the Beach.  Spike 'n Splash is here at last!  This combination of EVP Pro Beach Volleyball and the Grand Prix of Watercross, presented by Real Racine, brings action and excitement to North Beach. Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday are two-person men's and women's volleyball teams competing for $5,000 in prizes. They'll be playing all day in tournament action. The semifinals start at 3:30 p.m. and the finals are at 5 p.m.  The Grand Prix of Watercross brings more than 200 watercraft teams from across the country vie for $10,000 in prizes. They will compete from 10:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. You won't want to miss the pro freestyle sessions at noon both days. Spike 'n Splash is free for spectators.             An annual run. The 34th Annual Lighthouse Run steps off at 8 a.m. Saturday from the Racine Family YMCA, 725 Lake Ave. This popular event, which benefits the Y’s Strong Kids/Strong Communities campaign, consists of a 10-mile run, a 4-mile run and a 2-mile/4-mile fun run/walk. At 10 a.m., kids are invited to the Cree Kid’s Dash, a romp over final 200 meters of the course. Runners may enter on race day at $30 for the 10-mile and 4-mile runs and $20 for the fun run/walk.             Learn Geocaching. The Caledonia Conservancy presents a free class, “Intro to Geocaching” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trout Ponds Prairie, 4819 4 Mile Road (southwest corner of Highway 31 and 4 Mile Road.) Dave and Tamara Janowski, Caledonia Conservancy members, will introduce you to the geocaching hobby and explain how to use a hand-held GPS unit or a wireless phone with a GPS app for a modern-day version of treasure hunting.             Music for a cause.  The 4th Annual Dan Jam celebrates the life of the late Daniel Robert Conner and benefits the Racine County Food Bank on Saturday. The music from 12 local bands gets under way at 2 p.m. the Johnson Park pavilion. There is also food, including a pig roast, kids activities, games and raffles. Admission is $5 plus two nonperishable food items or $10 without the food donation. You’re invited to come early and stay late.

 

            Irreverent comedy. Over Our Head Players present "Theatre Schmeatre" an evening of sketch comedy, silliness and satire at the Sixth Street Theater, 318 Sixth St. Shows are at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday and 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Saturday.             Weekend circus thrills.  Family Fun Circus comes to the Sturtevant SportPlex, 100116 Stellar Drive, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The show promises acrobats, jugglers, clowns, pony rides and more. Performances are 5 and 7:30 p.m. each day. Free tickets for kids ages 14 and under are available at area businesses.
