Wind Turbines at Waxdale Will Produce Electricity for SC Johnson Plant

During a presentation in Sturtevant, trustees learned that three turbines can generate electricity for 850 homes a year.

Wind turbines might soon be part of the horizon between and .

SC Johnson wants to build three structures at its Waxdale plant, Chip Brewer, director of global government relations, told the Sturtevant Continual Committee on Oct. 11. The energy produced is expected to equal the same amount of electricity used to power 850 homes per year.

"In addition to producing 15 percent of Waxdale's energy needs, we believe the use of renewable energy enhances the area's reputation and could attract other businesses," he said.

Letters were sent to 300 residents and businesses around Waxdale telling them of the company's plan and inviting them to a . Brewer apologized to village trustees for scheduling the meeting at the same time as the committee meeting.

Holding the letter he received, Trustee Daryl Lynaugh asked about noise. Brewer said as the blades of the turbine come down, the noise would be equivalent to that of a passing car.

"But given where the turbines will be built, I think you may not even hear them," added. "In a more rural setting, the sound would probably be distinctive, but because this is a more urban area, I expect the background noise should help the noise blend in."

From the ground to the tip of the uppermost blade, the turbines will be between 300 and 400 feet tall. SC Johnson did have to file notice with the Federal Aviation Administration because of a potential aviation hazard.

According to an information sheet prepared by the company and left at Village Hall for residents, SC Johnson is looking at the wind turbines as an opportunity to support local jobs by partnering with area businesses for materials and construction. A bullet point also points to potential partnerships with local schools so students can get experience in sustainable manufacturing, alternative energy use and training for green jobs.

Residents are invited to a public hearing about the turbines at 7 pm on Tues., Oct. 18 at Mount Pleasant Village Hall, 8811 Campus Drive. Call (262) 664-7800.
