Village Board Approves New Compensation for Interim Administrator

After serving as the village's administrator for over a year, Ron Meyer will get retroactive pay reflective of his job responsibilities.

The Mount Pleasant Village Board Monday voted to increase Interim Administrator Ron Meyer's pay so it is commensurate with his duties retroactive to May 10, 2011.

After village trustees fired former Administrator Mike Andreasen in May 2011, they named Planning Director Ron Meyer as part of an interim management team with Village President Carolyn Milkie and former Clerk/Treasurer Debra Salas. The team was mostly dissolved after Salas left the village in February, and Meyer was named Interim Administrator in March 2012.

Veronica Rudychev was hired to take Salas' place, and started working in Mount Pleasant in March.

On April 23, 2012, trustees agreed to adjust Meyer's pay by giving him a one-time bonus of $7,500 for the work he'd done before March 26 and to bump his pay to $93,958 as of March 26. The $7,500 bonus is half of the difference between Meyer's Planning Director salary and what the former administrator was taking home. Milkie said the salary as of March 26 reflected what Andreasen's salary was in 2011.

But Meyer asked the board to reconsider the offer because he felt the original offer did not reflect how much time and effort goes into being the administrator and still running the Planning Department.

"In my opinion, we ended up with an offer everyone can live with even if not everyone is completely comfortable," said Trustee Gary Feest after the meeting.

When trustees emerged from an almost 60-minute closed session that focused solely on Meyer's compensation, they unanimously voted to make his Interim Adminstrator title and pay retroactive to May 10, 2011, the day after Andreasen was fired.

"I'm happy to continue as interim village administrator and look forward to further reforms like our garbage contract," Meyer said after the decision was announced.

Trustee Karen Albeck Karen was satisfied with the outcome.

"I'm pleased that Ron Meyer is serving as Interim Administrator," she said. "He's doing a great job."

Village President Carolyn Milkie agreed.

"He deserves this recognition for the great job he's been doing since May 2011," she stated.

Mount Pleasant is still trying to find a permanent administrator and is probably going. An initial search last fall brought in 43 resumes, but the village was unable to fill the position with any of those applicants.

Almost $100k? And he's not satisfied? Wow! We have the wrong person as the interim administrator. This is no different than unions pushing for more compensation even when it puts a strain on the village budget.
