Veterans Home in Union Grove Under Scrutiny

Rep. Robin Vos and Sen. Van Wanggaard are on the audit committee that discovered shortfalls in care and financial oversight.

Questions about the care veterans receive at the Union Grove Veterans Home are being raised after an audit revealed management problems and shortfalls in financial oversight.

Representative Robin Vos (R-Caledonia) and State Senator Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) are part of a committee, with Representative Samantha Kerkman (R-Randall), that received the less-than-satisfactory news of major program management issues.

“The results of the audit are absolutely not acceptable,” said Wanggaard. “We don’t need excuses, we need problem-solving actions to take care of the veterans who served us and continue to serve us.”

Secretary Kenneth Black is resigning this week, but he reported to the Joint Legislative Audit Committee a reorganization plan that cites specific changes to bring financial solvency. Part of the plan also includes turning Gates Hall at the Union Grove home into a skilled nursing facility.

Reports from the Department of Veterans Affairs must be received by July 1 about program and management improvements.
