Sturtevant Village Board Will Talk Conceal Carry, Collective Bargaining, and More

Trustees have a full agenda.

Whether or not citizens can carry their permitted, conceals guns inside Sturtevant Village Hall goes up for discussion at the Sept. 20 Village Board meeting.

Trustees will listen to a short presentation from Police Chief Sean Marschke about the reasons for not prohibiting permitted residents with weapons into Village Hall.

"Most citizens who will undergo the background check and training are law-abiding and not really who we have to worry about," he said.

Enforcing the issue would be beyond the village's resources, too, since manned metal detectors in the only sure method. But, too, Marschke told trustees on Sept. 13 that if the village chooses to ban permitted conceal carry at Village Hall, they waive certain "at fault" protections under state statute.

"Sturtevant could be held liable if you ban the weapons and someone starts shooting," he said.

Trustee Linda Busha objects to allowing conceal carry at Village Hall, but board memberChris Wright supports Marschke's stance.

"A posted sign won't do any good," Wright said.

Other issues on the agenda include:

  • Approval of donating $250 toward the Village of Caledonia's efforts to restore several historic buildings, including the old Amtrak depot that was moved from downtown Sturtevant;
  • Approval of several collective bargaining agreements for both Sturtevant Police officers and municipal Public Works employees
  • Granting a conditional use permit for Killarney Kourt to begin offering some assisted living services.

The Sturtevant Village Board meets at 6 pm on Tues., Sept. 20, at Village Hall, 2801 89th Street. Call (262) 886-7200.
