Sturtevant Naming New Detention Pond

Should the village honor the area's railroad history, community leaders or its role in World War II?

The new detention pond in Sturtevant needs a name.

Located in the southwest corner of the village at about Highways 11 and H, the pond is nearly completed. Like other detention ponds in Sturtevant, this new pond will also have a walking trail bordered by native trees and plants.

"Our goal is to make the pond an area with walking trails and benches," said Trustee Chris Larsen, head of the Storm Water and Wastewater Committee. "We are also working with the DNR to stock the pond with fish."

Some ideas for names were floated at the July 26 Committee Meeting. A few are meant to honor the area's railroad history while others recall Camp Sturtevant from World War II or honor community leaders:

  • Western Union Junction Pond
  • Hiawatha Line Pond
  • Camp Sturtevant Pond
  • Clay Morgan Pond
  • Barb Pauls Pond
  • Air City Pond (an ode to the old airport)

The Kirkorian Nature Preserve, for example, was named for Abe Kirkorian, a former village president. St. Bonaventure Pond was named for the school that was located on the land where the Racine Correctional Institution now stands.
