Story of the Week: Mount Pleasant Village Administrator Removed

The village board voted unanimously to fire Mike Andreasen after being in closed session for almost two hours.

At the Mon., May 9, village board meeting, trustees voted to remove Village Administrator Mike Andreasen "without cause." An agenda item stated the board would convene into closed session for "administrative personnel per Juliet Edmands Correspondence."

Board members would not comment further and a verbal request for the Edmands letter was turned down because it pertains to a personnel issue. Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Patch put in an Open Records Request for the letter, but Village President Carolyn Milkie said an opinion from the village attorney is forthcoming confirming the village's stance.

Juliet Edmands was removed as village clerk/treasurer at the April 11 board meeting. Last August, the board voted to change the clerk/treasurer position from an elected official to an appointed position. Edmands applied for her job, but the board voted to hire Debra Salas instead.

Andreasen said he doesn't know what was behind his firing, but that this is the nature of municipal business. His future plans include taking some time off.

For now, a management team comprised of Milkie, Planning Director Ron Meyer, and Salas will take care of the day-to-day operations of the village. There is a special board meeting scheduled for 6 pm Mon., May 16, so trustees can discuss the next step.
