State Democrats Want GOP 'Protest' Candidates Off Recall Ballot

In a move that surprises no one because it was announced the other day, Jeremy Levinson, attorney for the state Democratic Party, has filed a formal complaint with the state Government Accountability Board over the GOP's "protest" candidates.

Well, it's officially a complaint now.

The Associated Press is reporting that Jeremy Levinson, attorney for state Democrats, has filed a formal complaint with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board over the state GOP running "protest" candidates in the upcoming recall elections.

Levinson wants the six candidates — four in the state Senate recalls as well as governor and lieutenant governor contests — removed from the ballot because he claims when they really aren't.

Levinson says the "protest" candidates — including Tamra Varebrook in Racine County for the 21st Senate District — are just a way for the Republicans to manipulate the elections. Republicans say they're running the "fake Democrats" to keep Democrats from dictating the scheduling of elections.

But Levinson's argument also includes charges of disenfranchisement.

"Since people can sign only one candidate's nomination paper per office, anyone who signed a fake Democrat's papers lost an opportunity to nominate a legitimate Democrat," he is quoted as saying.

Ben Sparks, spokesman for the Republican Party of Wisconsin, said the GAB was well aware of and still allowed the six "protest" candidates on the ballot.

As for what the GAB will do, Reid Magney, spokesman for the agency, said any challenges will be taken up at Tuesday's board meeting.

DAN - do you THINK at all? Did it overheat your brain to have a thought? Are you sure your thinking is correct? Did Arianna tell you to write this? Can you think at all - or are you living proof that the brain-dead live?

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, WHINE,WHINE,WHINE CRY,CRY,CRY, WHAT in the World does Stand Your Ground Laws have to do with this - and isn't this law color-blind - useful to people whomever they may be? You NEED to seek serious mental health treatment from a professional, because you are clearly DISCONNECTED from REALITY.

NO, You don't teach second grade - you're a troll - wanting to continue in the tradition of the above irrelevant and thoughtless posts above. You FAIL to see my sarcasm above? Of course you fail to understand. Look at your last sentence. REALLY? FAIL - TROLL.
enicar333 April 13, 2012 at 12:42 PM
It's not claims - it has been backed up by facts repeatedly... There is a legitimate reason for it, do you know why? Does it have anything to do with the GAB making partisan decisions? Do you know what that decision is? Do you know what these words mean? Please play again.

Your comments are so funny, they make me laugh out loud. I can just imagine you standing there with a red face, holding your breath and steam coming out of your ears, just like the cartoon character you are. Keep it up, 333Racine - you continue to get everything backwards, as is your style!

I feel for the people of Wisconsin. What a mess!! Republicans just continue to shoot themselves in the foot. Such disgustingly underhanded tactics should not be permitted. Republicans are showing there true colors all over the country. Republicans have pretty much become the party of hate, and I hope the people of Wisconsin are informed enough to see though their shameful behavior.

enicar333: Talking about "playground tactics" while using nothing but name-calling and playground tactics! Clever stuff - if it's satire. If not, I have a word for you: decaf.

OK HUFF-PO Pro Posters - let us try this again! AND... as an added BONUS! The first one who gets it right - gets a *GOLD STAR* next to their name - and gets to be HALLWAY MONITOR!. Running "fake candidates" has a purpose. This is because the GAB made a partisan decision that would result in Democrats having an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE in the elections. Running these candidates would result in a different scenario, that would eliminate the Democrat advantage and LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD. This would be fair to everyone - and should not be objectionable. Republicans are not the problem - a Partisan GAB is the problem. NOW - can any of you HUFF-PO Pro Posters respond intelligently to the above statement of truth and fact?
enicar333 April 13, 2012 at 01:54 PM
How sad it must be to be you - with that sort of warped and twisted thinking bouncing around in that head. Another HUFF-PO Pro-Poster sitting comfortably (we hope) in New York, sharing Arianna's opinion with the people of the Midwest.

Since when, in Wisconsin, do you have to declare if you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent. All Wisconsin residents can run for office in any party at any time. I think the Republican party should sue the Democrat party for preventing legal citizens from running for office.
MrsPeel April 13, 2012 at 05:07 PM
@Dennis... If you are able, find the form that a candidate must sign to run for office in the partisan elections and you might find the answer to your question.
Kevin Presser April 13, 2012 at 05:29 PM
It really is funny that all the Democrats are decrying the fake candidates, when the Republicans stole that move from the Democratic playbook. Remember the fake candidates the Democrats ran against Zigelbauer? Now, that it is not to their advantage they claim it is immoral, unethical, and illegal. Please, a little consistency would be welcome.

Perversion of the facts, and in this case, the intent of the law is the specialty of the GOP. Are all Republicans "bad" people? Of course not. However, the overarching strategies and interests of the party as a whole are abhorrent as is the blatant disregard for middle-class citizens, blue-collar workers, women, the elderly and minorities demonstrated by their actions and rhetoric. The leaked playbook illustrates this perfectly. It consisted of 5 distinct steps: Step 1: Avoid Responsibility for GOP Failures Step 2: Increase Negativity Step 3: “Throw the Bums Out!” Step 4: Make Formal Pledge of Grandiose Promises Step 5: Retake Congress (Now the White House) This behavior and mentality is not worthy of the support of the average American, yet somehow many still fall for this crap! I never care to paint an entire group of people with one brush, however the gullibility of said supporters leads one to question their individual intellectual capabilities.
CowDung April 13, 2012 at 06:32 PM
Here it is. http://elections.state.wi.us/docview.asp?docid=1839&locid=47 You have to put down the party you wish to represent in the election. As Wisconsin doesn't require anyone to declare party affiliations, anyone can choose to represent any political party in an election.
Mocha Mel April 13, 2012 at 06:55 PM
There was no attack upon Christians in my previous post. I am a Christian and what I was truly attacking was the fact that the conservative right (at least in the south) consistently imply and often outright say that opposing views and failure to vote Republican equate to being a "bad christian." By using this argument it is then being said that essentially the only way to be a "good" or "real" Christian is to vote Republican, thereby raising affiliation with a political party to a level of importance above true faith in our savior-Jesus. That is essentially idolatry, hence, my post. Jesus/God+Nothing= Everything. Further, there was no attack against any religious grouping outside of Christianity in my post. I addressed a specific issue and never even mentioned anything else. Though I recognize the inherent difficulty for a right-winger, putting your spin on my words distorts the point leading to pointless discourse. Let's focus on the point, shall we?
Kevin Presser April 13, 2012 at 07:25 PM
So Mocha Mel, are the Democrats stealing the Republicans thunder; because it seems to me Steps 1-5 describe Obama's campaign to a "T." This looks like a case of what came first, the chicken or the egg? I may have missed it, but I haven't seen the Republicans do anything that the Democrats haven't done already.
Mocha Mel April 13, 2012 at 10:39 PM
@ Kevin Presser, please elaborate. What exactly is it that the President has done that falls into any of these categories? Let's take this step-by-step. Step 1. His primary promises/goals were to reverse the flood of jobs being lost, help homeowners facing foreclosure, address health care, institute financial/banking reforms & oversight, reduce dependency on foreign oil, end the Iraq War/catch Bin-Laden, improve standing & increase influence around the world. Realistically, not every objective can be met fully, yet the President has delivered on the big ones and is clearly working toward the rest. Step 2: The campaign ads now airing are clarifications in response to the bull being spewed by the opposition; they're not fact-less, fear mongering, mud-slinging attack ads. Step 3. Speaks for itself and I agree. Step 4. He's promising only what can be worked on. No claims of riches for all or instant results. See his acceptance speech if you've forgotten. Step 5. I hope he wins & this time he's got my vote. Why? Believe it or not, I was ignorantly a Republican supporter (though I disagreed with re:health care & reproductive rights). Since 2008, the GOP has adopted a broad policy to block, pervert, & undermine all efforts regardless of how effective/beneficial the legislation may be. The goal being to cast the President in a negative light, rather than do what the people have "hired" them to do. They lost me with their block, blame and slander campaign.

Continued... An analogy: Think about it! Let's say you hire someone to be a VP within your company, though what that person wanted was the position of CEO. Then that person devises a plan designed to get the CEO fired so he can win the position despite the damage those actions will inflict upon your company. The execution of the VP's plan includes: -attempting to block all initiatives/plans (even if they'd work effectively). -adding to (or subtracting from) sections of plans rendering it less effective/practical. -propagating obvious falsehoods to spear the reputation of the CEO. -then blaming the CEO for being less effective than he could have been. Would you say that the smarter choice would be to promote that individual to be the new CEO? Or replace the trouble-maker while keeping the CEO (who clearly has the best interests of the organization at heart)? If you get this one wrong you're either lying or you're a fool.

Obama hasn't done anything good for the People. He is an Insider and a friend of the Banksters - just as those on the Republican side. You don't make it to President without being a friend of Wall Street. Obama has bailed the Banksters out with tax $$$. You want healthcare reform? I do to. You don't do it by trying to force people to purchase it from private FOR-PROFIT Corporations. YOU END For-Profit Insurance, limit and cap salaries for thos who run the non-profit insurance funds - institute tort reform and limit liability for health practicioners - You don't shred the Constitution and enrich your cronies in the for profit insurance scam. Peak oil is here, along with persistent high energy prices - it is a game changer. The good old days are gone - austerity Is coming - Americans can't deal with austerity.
