Wisconsin Senate Race Tightening, While Obama Retains Wide Lead: Poll

President Barack Obama still leads Republican challenger Mitt Romney by double digits, Democrat Tammy Baldwin's edge over Republican Tommy Thompson in U.S. Senate race is lessening, new Marquette University Law School poll shows.

A poll released Wednesday by Marquette University shows President Barack Obama maintaining a sizable lead over Republican Mitt Romney among likely Wisconsin voters.

, according to the poll. The latest poll, released the same day at the first presidential debate, has Obama's lead is down to 11 points — 53 to 42 percent.

The U.S. Senate race, though, between Democrat U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin and former Gov. Tommy Thompson shows some signs of tightening. In August, Thompson led Baldwin by 9 points, but in September, results flipped, giving Baldwin the 9-point nod.

But Wednesday's poll has Baldwin with the edge by a smaller margin — 48 to 44 percent. That's barely outisde the poll's margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.

Gender seems to play a role in which way voters lean, too.  The poll shows that women support Baldwin more than Thompson — 54 to 38 percent. Men back Thompson over Baldwin by a margin of 50 to 41 percent.

Those numbers get farther apart when it comes to the presidential election. Female voters back Obama over Romney by 61 percent to 38 percent. The spread between the candidates gets smaller for men, though, with Romney leading Obama 48 to 44 percent.

Results were presented Wednesday during an edition of "On the Issues" with broadcaster Mike Gousha and Professor Charles Franklin, director of the year-long polling project. The poll of 894 likely voters was conducted from Sept. 27-30.

Ryan vs Biden should prove to be the comedy event of the decade!
Get ready to laugh!!!

@FreeThought Troy -
The filtered media, no matter what kind of partisan affiliation they subscribe to and perpetuate, should be avoided at all costs by anyone who's serious about learning the truth. Only primary source data should be considered, while all secondary third party analysis is automatically dismissed. The people should review the primary sources for themselves, perform their own analysis, and come to their own conclusions. Just imagine how informed about the TRUTH everyone would be if they only followed this simple standard! And conservatives actually have more heart than liberals. As a percentage of income, Romney gave away more money to charity this last year than Obama and Biden combined have given away since the year 2000. Clearly, the conservative in this race has a way bigger heart than the two grinches currently occupying the WH!
Jen McFarland October 5, 2012 at 04:33 pm
Precisely. Research involves more than just taking what someone has told you and running with it.
As far as heart, Romney's business is based on helping companies improve their productivity, therefore making them more successful. And it's not done by just throwing borrowed money at them, either. Gosh, who do we know has done that?! Oh, and when Issac came through and ripped the shit out of states bordered by the gulf, Romney was down there to be with the people and showing compassion. Where was Obama? Why, campaigning of course. And I don't know about you, but my mirror loves the hell outta me!
Jen McFarland October 5, 2012 at 04:49 pm
As an after thought, I will say, you're assuming I'm old (27), that I have cable (I don't. I can't afford it and don't pretend that I can. It's called living within one's means instead of depending upon handouts), and that I listen to talk radio (I listen to Hannity to geek out at how loud and long he can speak in one whole breath). I will retract my assumption about depending on MSNBC, it was merely an example being that it is the mothership of liberalism/socialism in the main stream media, or so I am to understand since I haven't the stomach to actually watch more than snippets online.
I'm guessing (not assuming) that you have never actually watched Fox News or listened to "St. Rush" (cute, really). I'm also guessing that when you look in the mirror you see a pretty face, believe you're always right, and think there is no such thing as common sense. Do you claim Obama's inherited this mess as well? A true "free thinker" thinks outside the box, looks up their information on their own and makes a decision based on facts. I don't believe everything I've been told, in fact, I've been taught to do my own research from many sources. You may want to live in a socilalist society, that is your choice and opinion. I; however, would prefer to stay living in the land of the free and keep it that way.

@Jen -
Nice response!
Randy1949 October 5, 2012 at 05:28 pm
@Jen Kral -- "Well you know what they say, when you're young and a liberal, you've got heart,"
So when you're young and conservative, what does that say? You think people with cable depend on handouts? It's actually a matter of priorities. Cable, as a source of information, is worth more to be than a cell-phone or a car that's under the age of fifteen.
Jen McFarland October 5, 2012 at 05:55 pm
Young and conservative? Hmm.. I guess I'd have to get back to you on that one. I'm not arrogant enough to have to worry about applying a label, but don't you worry, as soon as I think of one, you'll be first on my list to tell!
Cable is a matter of priorities, and if I had a dollar for every case I've seen where it's been a higher priority than say food, clothing, rent, or even the electricity required to enjoy said cable, I could afford to pay a great many people's cable bill. That would be the sector of society who (for generations) have lived off the state and are breeding the next generation of leeches that my children will undoubtedly have to pay for with their hard earned money, along with the ginormous credit card bill Obama will have left. My priorities lie with keeping my children fed, clothed, and warm and knowing that you work for what you want, not waiting with an open hand. What ever happened to reading? The newspaper is a great source of information and it costs around $26 a month, much less than cable. Or better yet, there's the library where you can find all of that information online for FREE! But you enjoy your cable television and I'll be thankful for the job I have so I can afford my safe and dependable car to transport my children in and the cell phone that keeps me in touch with friends, family, and emergency services, God forbid I ever need them. Oh, and I'd call that "having common sense". A foreign concept, I'm sure.
Randy1949 October 5, 2012 at 06:42 pm
Why the automatic assumption that I don't have a job (or retirement savings) to afford certain things in lieu of others? You do sound conservative, by the way.
Jen McFarland October 5, 2012 at 07:07 pm
Well Jiminy Crickets Randy, after reading and re-reading what I posted, I never once made a comment insinuating that you don't have a job or retirement savings. In fact, save for the comment regarding my self proclaimed label or encouraging you to enjoy your cable, I didn't refer directly to you as an individual. But true to Liberal form, you took what I said, plucked a few select words, and turned my statement into something different.
Randy1949 October 5, 2012 at 08:06 pm
I guess you're deaf (blind?) to your own tone. Why the need for the slap at "the sector of society who (for generations) have lived off the state and are breeding the next generation of leeches that my children will undoubtedly have to pay for with their hard earned money, along with the ginormous credit card bill Obama will have left."?

Jen: Pay no attention to the old man behind the curtain, he likes to deflect around subject matter that is factual against liberal beliefs.
His anger is mistakenly directed at anyone who is not a liberal, with ObamaCare he may seek some counseling. Hang in there, deep down Randy knows he is a conservative.
Randy1949 October 5, 2012 at 10:03 pm
Dream on, Craig. I've become more liberal as the years went on, and the tone taken by Conservatives here on the patch has only confirmed my resolve. I'm alert to that self-congratulatory snark:
"It's called living within one's means instead of depending upon handouts" "the sector of society who (for generations) have lived off the state and are breeding the next generation of leeches that my children will undoubtedly have to pay for with their hard earned money," "Oh, and I'd call that "having common sense". A foreign concept, I'm sure."
Craig October 6, 2012 at 02:40 am
Randy I have a dream. I don't think it is very different from yours. I want medicare saved; not only for my mother and inlaws, but myself as well. I want Social Security to be there for me, hell I paid into it (and it is a trust fund)
I don't want future generations saddled with an enormus tax burden and National Debt. I want there to be jobs for my kids and grandkids. I most definately do not want a foreign Country to overtake the US because we became bankrupt. Developing nations have the financial means to do this, they are not debt ridden. I feel everyone who is capable should work, those who are not capable should be given assistance. In order for this to happen, we need someone willing to take some risks and make changes. Real change, not just a slogan of change you can believe in.
Craig October 6, 2012 at 02:46 am
If you feel the same Randy, you should vote for Romney and Ryan.
Barack Hussein has not taken a single step in the right direction to address even one of these issues. Despite his promises, he has not delivered one single thing. $6 Trillion of added debt in less than four years....we are in a free fall, and Obama is pushing us faster downhill.

@Joseph Robert -
Once again, the sources you cite are all known for their extreme liberal bias - especially ThinkProgress. Not that any of the so-called 'fact-checkers' have ever proven to be all that accurate, but most of the somewhat reputable ones seem to concur that both Obama and Romney equally misrepresented the full truth during the 90 minute debate, with Obama actually doing just a bit more 'lying' than Romney! Even then, much of the assertions of the so-called 'fact-checkers' are premised upon interpretations, assumptions, conjectures, projections, suppositions, etc as opposed to hard objective truth! http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/advisor/fact-check-presidential-debate-missteps-155346190.html Perpahs you need to learn how to research the primary sources for youself, peform your own analysis, and come to your own conclusions instead of being a lemming to the liberal media opinion makers! Don't believe the self-declared 'fact-checkers' - do your own research of the primary sources and come to your own conclusions!

@morninmist -
How much of Obama's money is coming from overseas donors such as Hugo Chavez, Castro, and other prominent global socialists/communists? Funny you mention how GE moved the x-ray division out of Wisconsin and over to China under their current CEO, Jeffrey Immelt, who just so happes to be Obama's jobs czar, that he never seems to actually meet with by-the-way, except of course to laugh about how "shovel ready wasn't as shovel as we expected" - and Obama's policies did absolutely nothing to stop that from ocurring!!! Yep, a vote for Obama is a vote for conitnued offshoring! Romney = American jobs!!! ROMNEY/RYAN/THOMPSON/VOS 2012!!!

The Emperor Tiberius of the Roman Empire confronted his Senate when he realized that it was unwilling to make any decisions whatsoever.
"Fit to be slaves, fit to be slaves!," he yelled at them. That is how I feel about the US Senate.
Jen McFarland October 8, 2012 at 01:24 pm
He used his "Bank o' China" credit card to pay for businesses that should have been left to sink or swim on their own (a few ended up going bankrupt anyway!!) He can't spew on about how he wants to tax the wealthy more when all he did was drop more money in their pockets. All for the working middle class my foot. If he wanted to stimulate the economy, he should've given money to those who would've put it right back into circulation. But by all means, let's vote for a man who spends more time (and money) out on vacation than doing the job he promised he was going to do. And Craig, I'm not all that concerned about Randy. He can't help the fact that the more he sits in front of his MSM cable television, the more liberal he'll become. Whaaatever.
Lyle Ruble October 8, 2012 at 01:49 pm
@Jen Kral... Your statement about the "Chinese Credit Card" isn't exactly accurate. How much is the national debt actually owned by the Chinese? In reality the majority of debt is actually owned by US citizens.
Randy1949 October 8, 2012 at 04:00 pm
@Jen Kral -- It would be a mistake to make casual assumptions about the etiology of my politics. When I was your age I thought my extremely liberal and socialist friends were rather quaint with their support of unions. I believed, as you seem to, that if you managed your life well and used common sense -- got an education, got married before having children, put money in the bank rather than wasting it on frivolities -- that my family and I wouldn't end up a part of that low-wage class you look down your nose at. Then it came to pass that I worked for several small businesses and learned how it is to work your butt off for next to nothing.
I sincerely hope that life doesn't teach you that same lesson, but it is very possible.
Jen McFarland October 10, 2012 at 01:52 pm
You're assuming I look down my nose at the low-income class. Seeing as I am in that class, it would seem a little hypocritical, wouldn't you say? I "look down my nose" at those who don't have a pot to piss in or the window to throw it out of, but still manage to have the newest cell phone, buying their children the newest electronics, having cable, etc, but can't seem to swing groceries, or rent, or putting clean clothes on their children, or even taking them to the dentist or the doctor. My husband and I don't make all that much money, but I'll be damned if I'm going to put frivolties ahead of what's important. So don't try and make me out to be the snob you assume I am. Last I checked, you don't have to be rich to be a conservative, and yes, if many used the common sense God gave a rock, perhaps then the low-income class wouldn't be as bad off. It's called being responsible for yourself and those who depend on you. If you spend money (whether it was earned or handed to you), foolishly, you're just teaching the next generation to do it as well.
