Mount Pleasant Votes Milkie to Another Term and Return Hewitt to the Village Board

Residents also re-elected Karen Albeck and Sonny Havn each for another two-year term as Trustee.

In what turned out to be a fairly close race for Village President, incumbent Carolyn Milkie beat former police chief James Majdoch, 3,660 to 2,995. Write-in candidate Sharman Turek garnered the majority of the 643 write-in votes.

"I want to thank the voters in the direction Mount Pleasant is going and trusting me to shepherd the village through the next two years," Milkie said.

Three village trustees were up for re-election; Ingrid Tiegel, Sonny Havn and Karen Albeck, and they faced three challengers in Patrick Metzker, Joseph Malin and former village board member John Hewitt.

Each of the RUSD referendum questions were soundly defeated by an almost two-to-one margin. The first question of whether or not to fund $83.5 million for five new and five renovated schools was 5,332 to 2,877. Voters also rejected the second question about program operating funds of $35 million over seven years, 5,378 to 2,801, and turned down the third question asking for $1 million a year over 10 years for the district's fund balance 5,506 to 2,588.

"I'm not surprised that voters reacted this way to the referendum," Milkie stated. "With the economic times we're in, it was going to be difficult to ask voters for such large amounts."

Village residents also approved Register of Deeds Jim Ladwig for County Executive 4,698 to 3,148, over Ken Hall.

State Supreme Court Justice David Prosser received 4,632 votes over 3,770 votes for Assistant State Attorney Joanne Kloppenburg.
