Mount Pleasant Holding Last Village Board Meeting Before Moving to New Building

A new village clerk/treasurer will be appointed, and a historical perspective will be offered.

The Mount Pleasant Village Board will meet for the last time tonight, April 11, at what is known as the "old village hall" at the corner of Highways 11 and 31. The next meeting on April 25 will be held at the new village hall campus north of Highway 20 and 90th Street.

After Village President Carolyn Milkie delivers an address to residents about the village's roots and its future, board members will move into closed session to make decisions about purchasing land for parks and appointing a new Clerk/Treasurer.

Until early 2010, the Clerk/Treasurer had been elected, but the village board moved to make the position appointed because the job can be complicated with a high level of responsibility.

"There needs to be more consistency in this position, and holding elections every two years doesn't deliver that promise to village residents," said Milkie.

Juliet Edmands has been Clerk/Treasurer since 2001. The board is considering her candidacy and that of one other person.

Additionally, the board will welcome Dan Schneider from Crispell-Snyder, the engineering firm for the village. Schneider is expected to explain to residents why sewer charges will increase from $95 to $115 this year.

According to Milkie, the fees will help cover the village's increased costs, including an increase of fees from the City of Racine for certain treatment for federally mandated higher water quality standards.
