Mason for Lt. Governor? Maybe

Cory Mason is contemplating a run for Lt. Governor while former State Sen. John Lehman may try to get his old seat back from Van Wanggaard.

Update: Rep. Cory Mason told Patch on Dec. 9 that he is humbled and flattered residents think he could be part of a team that would restore democracy to Wisconsin. Still, he thinks the focus should remain on collecting the necessary signatures for recall.

"We need to stay focused on the recalls of the Governor and the Lt. Governor because of their agenda that unfairly targeted the middle class," he said.

As for why he is interested in the Lt. Governor's office, Mason said the position is one of support so its hard to define without a solid gubernatorial candidate in place. Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) has been mentioned as a possible challenger should there be a Walker recall election.

"Certainly the candidate potentially facing Governor Walker plays into consideration," he said. "But I want to do whatever is best for the ticket."

Any decision, he repeated, will come after the arrival of his family's new baby, expected sometime this month.

Original Story: There is still a month to go before recall organizers have to meet their signature goals, but talk is swirling around who will run for what should there be recall elections next spring.

Rep. Cory Mason (D-Racine) told that he and his wife are discussing their options while the await the arrival of a new baby. At the time, though, we were talking about Mason possibly running against State Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) in a recall election.

"We are undecided at this point," he said at the time. "There are a lot of considerations or moving parts, like redistricting, for one. We're going to weigh our options for the future."

But in a story running in The Journal Times, Mason said he's giving serious thought to running for the Lt. Governor office, albeit after the new baby makes its appearance any day now.

Former State Sen. John Lehman, who lost to Wanggaard in 2010, may take up that challenge again even though he considered himself retired from politics.

Recall efforts against Governor Scott Walker, Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch and State Sen. Van Wanggaard launched on Nov. 15. As of the required 540,000 needed to recall the governor and were well on their way to the 15,000 needed for Wanggaard.
