Homicide Victim Identified, Man Hides in Bar Basement, Fire Guts Home

Crime and politics top our first week in review story of 2013.

For the first week of the new year, Patch readers once again were most interested in stories having to do with crime.

Police released the identity of the Christmas Day fire victim. A dental comparison expert in Milwaukee was able to confirm that 21-year-old Bianca Vite was the young woman found after a fire gutted a home on 16th Street.

A man found hiding in the basement of the Hiawatha is believed by the owners to be responsible for several thefts from the bar. He's reportedly related, witnesses told police.

Rounding out the top three is the story about the fire Friday morning on Durand Avenue. No one was home so no human injuries were reported, but the blaze damaged the house so that the building and everything inside was considered a total loss.
