Handicapped Buttons Will Open the Door for Wheelchairs and Walkers

Mount Pleasant Village Hall will have a wireless system at the main entrance.

The new Mount Pleasant Village Hall has hydraulic doors for visitors who need them, but the need for handicapped buttons to help open the doors was overlooked during the construction process.

Deputy Director of Planning Brennan Kane told the Finance/Legal/Licence Committee on July 13 that he received feedback that amounts to four buttons per entrance at $1,000 each.

"One button will go on the wood column outside, one in the vestibule and one in the lobby for entrance and exit," he told the committee.

The buttons will be large and silver, similar to other government and office buildings, but they will be wireless and battery operated.

Committee members Trustees Karen Albeck, Harry Manning, and Sonny Havn voted unanimously to approve the buttons for the main entrance, capping costs at $1,000. The money will come from a capital contingency fund.
