Former Mount Pleasant Clerk Severance Request on Village Board Agenda

Trustees will go into closed session to discuss Juliet Edmands' request for a severance package.

When the Mount Pleasant Village Board meets at 7 pm tonight, May 23, they will convene into closed session to discuss a severance request from former Clerk/Treasurer Juliet Edmands.

In August 2010, trustees voted to move the Clerk/Treasurer position from an elected official to an appointed staff position.Β

Edmands applied for her job, but on April 11, the board voted to hire Debra Salas. She had been the deputy clerk/treasurer in Kenosha.

At the May 9 board meeting, Village President Carolyn Milkie referred Edmands' request to the Finance Committee, but Trustee Harry Manning today said the matter was more appropriate for the board.

"Many requests or questions or concerns we get from residents will now go to the right committee," Manning said. "This is a unique situation so it's really for the board to take on."

Edmands' request for a severance package, if approved, could set a precedent for other municipalities since elected officials are voted in and out of office and are therefore employed by the citizens and not the village or city they serve. Mount Pleasant would become the only incorporated municipality in Wisconsin to offer such an option if the board agrees.

Calls to Edmands for comment were not returned.
