DOMA Ruling: Mount Pleasant, Caledonia Reacts to Supreme Court Decision

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act Wednesday, paving the way for same-sex married couples to receive federal benefits. Here's what some locals had to say about the historic ruling.

On a 5-4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act Wednesday, paving the way for same-sex married couples to receive federal benefits, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

That doesn’t change much for Wisconsinites, since same-sex marriage is still not allowed under state law. While same-sex marriage has been adopted in 12 states, a narrow companion ruling on a California case leaves same-sex marriage bans in place in other states, the newspaper says.

The Defense of Marriage Act, which was passed in 1996 by President Bill Clinton, blocked federal recognition of gay marriage.

With that said, some Mount Pleasant and Caledonia residents took to our Facebook pages to voice their opinion on the historic ruling. Here's a sampling:

Mary Cypcar: Love is love. I'm so happy to be sitting on the right side of history as the Supreme Court made the right decision on this historic day. How is it justifiable to treat people as second class citizens and not afford them the same rights and protections as others? This is a great day for both my gay and lesbian friends as well as our country as a whole. It's a big step in the right direction.

Michaela Keiser Gutierrez: I will not understand how people can make a judgement on how another loves! Everyone deserves the same treatment & respect and I think this is a great step for our country moving forward!

Liz Baran: I agree, it's long time this country recognizes equal rights.

Eddie Willing: Many of us religious folks like myself don't view it as a faith issue. Just a practical one. And constitutionally, it's a state issue. Even tho I personally oppose recognizing a family that cannot procreate as a procreation unit. If its about the legal aspect, create a legal status like anything else.

Matt Palmer: It's about darn time! People are people, no matter who they love. Why should they be treated as unequal or lesser than because of that?

Steve Lambert: I used to be anti everything. Then I grew up. What is the difference to anyone what gender people are? Are inter-racial marriages wrong? Of course not. Grow up America.

Victoria Roberts Smiley: As a straight, right-wing Christian I say...hooray! EQUALITY FOR ALL!
