Woman Faces Child Abuse, OAR and OWI Charges

Police in Sturtevant and a Sheriff's deputy in Mount Pleasant pulled Jennifer Chavez over for driving with a revoked license and for operating while under the influence, respectively.

A Racine woman's arrest warrant was vacated Thursday after she made her initial appearance on charges stemming from two September traffic stops.

Jennifer M. Chavez, 31, was stopped Sept. 11 in Sturtevant for having a suspended registration and was subsequently charged with operating after revocation.

According to the criminal complaint, on Sept. 28, a Racine County Sheriff's deputy pulled Chavez over for driving erratically on Highway 31 in Mount Pleasant.

The deputy's report indicates that the smell of intoxicants was present and Chavez had bloodshot eyes. Chavez was put through field sobriety tests, which she failed so the deputy asked Chavez to give a voluntary breath sample, but she refused.Β

Chavez was arrested for a second operating while intoxicated charge and taken to Wheaton Franciscan All Saint's for a blood draw. The results of the draw are not noted in criminal complaint.

Chavez was also charged with felony bail jumping in both the OAR and OWI cases because she was free on bond for felony child abuse. She failed to appear on Oct. 11 for the revocation charge so a warrant was issued for her arrest. That warrant was vacated when Chavez appeared in person Thursday for both the OAR and the OWI charges.

She is due in court Friday for a pretrial conference on the child abuse charges and will appear again for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 31 for the September charges. Chavez remains free on two, $2,500 signatures bonds from the traffic stops.
