Police Shoot and Kill Dog, Recover Drugs from Property

Mount Pleasant police say they were forced to shoot and kill a dog late Friday night.

Mount Pleasant police say they were forced to shoot a pit bull late Friday night after it charged at officers.

MPPD Sgt. Eric Relich said officers were called at 11:09 p.m. Friday to the 3500 block of Sheridan Road for a report of a loose dog. When police arrived on scene, they observed a pit bull running in and out of a house, barking and acting aggressively.

One officer attempted to contain the dog with the appropriate equipment while another officer knocked on the door of the house. It was at this point the dog charged the officer on the porch, and police were forced to shoot the animal.

"(The officer) used his service weapon and shot the dog to protect the officer at the door from sustaining injury," Relich said. "No officers were injured, (but) the dog died as a result of being shot."

No one answered repeated attempts to locate residents of the house, he added, after the dog was down.

Police did find illegal drugs on the property and obtained a search warrant for the home. Officers "recovered drugs and a significant amount of drug related equipment."

Officers do have a suspect but no arrests had been made as of Saturday morning. Names associated with this investigation haven't yet been released.
