Police: Evicted Tenant Took the Fridge, Left the Door

Racine police say a recently evicted tenant returned to steal the refrigerator out of her old apartment.

A warrant was vacated Monday when a Sturtevant woman made her initial appearance in court to face burglary charges.

Kristin Gonzalez, 25, was charged on March 27 with a single felony charge of burglary to a building or dwelling, and a $10,000 warrant was issued for her arrest. She appeared in person Tuesday, and the warrant was vacated. If convicted, Gonzalez faces up to 12-1/2 years in prison and/or up to $25,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, Gonzalez had been living in an apartment in the 1500 block of LaSalle in the City of Racine, but was evicted in May 2012. Poilce were called to the building on June 22, 2012 for a report of a former tenant who had returned and taken the furnished refrigerator with her.

Police say that at about 10 p.m. on June 21, 2012, a witness saw Gonzalez and a male accomplice take the door to her former unit off its hinges and carry the refrigerator out of the building. The door to the fridge was later found outside, leaning against an exterior wall.Β 

Officers observed the door to the unit off its hinges, the refrigerator missing and a box of rotting food sitting on the floor, the complaint reads.

Gonzalez was released on a $400 signature bond. She will next be in court on April 24.
