Pierce Named South Shore Fire Interim Fire Chief

Division Chief Mark Pierce will serve as the South Shore Interim Fire Chief until the Police and Fire Commission conducts a search and finds a new chief.

The Mount Pleasant Police and Fire Commission announced Friday that Division Chief Mark Pierce has been named Interim Fire Chief.

Pierce steps into the role after South Shore Fire Chief William Bouma retired on Oct. 4.

David Weiss, president of the commission, sent an email Friday to trustees and to key staff members announcing the appointment. Pierce was asked because according to the department's organizational chart, the division chief is next in command after the department chief.

"Rather than reinvent the wheel, we chose to follow the protocol indicated by the South Shore Fire Department Organizational Chart. As you can see by this document, directly under the position of Chief is the position of the Division Chief, who is currently Mark Pierce," he wrote. "The job of interim chief was offered to Mark who accepted it."

Pierce will fill the job until the commission finds a new chief.

William Miller, union president, said the department "will work within the management structure to achieve goals. There’s never been a question of whether or not we will be professional and do our jobs."

Pierce headed up fire inspections, public education, and support services like sprinkler and plan reviews. Miller said he expects the commission to name a new division chief in the interim as well.
