A 47-year-old California man reportedly committed suicide by stepping in front of a train the tracks between Highway 11 and Braun Road.

Mount Pleasant police are confirming that an adult male from California was struck and killed by a train early Thursday morning.

His death has been ruled a suicide, according to the Racine County Medical Examiner.

Capt. Brian Smith told Patch the incident happened at about 1:30 a.m. on the tracks between Highway 11 and Braun Road.

"We got the call of a train-pedestrian accident," he said. "There is definitely a deceased white, adult male struck by the train."

MPPD Sgt. Eric Relich verified in a press release that the victim is a 47-year-old male from California. His body was located about a mile south of Durand Avenue on the tracks adjacent to Willow Road.

"The (victim) has been identified," he wrote. "However, his name is being withheld pending family notification."

The Racine County Medical Examiner was called to the scene, and the State Patrol assisted MPPD with the crash investigation, Smith added.

Earlier Thursday morning, police were unsure if the man's death was a suicide or an accident.  Smith said police are not sure if it was a freight train or passenger train that struck the man, but given the time of day, it was probably a freight train.
